We investigated temperature dynamics in the Yaquina Bay estuary, which experiences large seasonal variations in river, coastal ocean, and surface heat flux conditions. We collected more than two years of observations at nine sites throughout the estuary and found seasonal changes in temperature variability linked to river discharge, river and ocean temperature, and surface heat flux. We found that neap tides are associated with estuary warming in the spring and summer. Sloughs exhibit unique dynamics influenced by their morphology, including stronger diurnal heating and cooling in areas with extensive mudflats. To further explore present and future temperature in Yaquina Bay, we developed a 3D hydrodynamic model of the estuary using the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM). We used the model to test the importance of surface heat flux and found that it plays a critical role in warming the estuary during the summer, but a minor role in winter when estuarine residence time is short and control by ocean and river temperatures is more dominant. Future changes in atmospheric, oceanic, and riverine conditions associated with climate change could alter estuarine temperature, affecting habitat suitability for species of economic, ecological, and cultural importance such as oysters, eelgrass, and salmon. This is particularly evident in the study of plankton, or organisms that live in the sea and drift with currents. Ranging from microscopic organisms to copepods, larval invertebrates and fishes, and gelatinous organisms, much of this planktonic life forms the base of the marine food web which supports larger and larger organisms up to marine mammals and even humans. Recent work with the In Situ Ichthyoplankton Imaging System (ISIIS), and its associated automated image processing pipeline, is presented as an example of where progress has been made with imaging systems. Examples are given of the application of ISIIS from projects conducted within the California Current Ecosystem ranging from detailed perspectives of thin layer dynamics in Monterey Bay, California, to riverine influence on cross shelf plankton community distributions to utilizing near-real time analyses to drive adaptive sampling within hypoxic areas off the Oregon coast. Causes of change and consequences for diversity on rocky shores Long-term, large-scale experimental studies provide critical information about how global change influences communities. When environmental changes are severe, they can trigger abrupt transitions from one community type to another leading to a regime shift. From 2014 to 2016, rocky intertidal habitats in the northeast Pacific Ocean experienced extreme temperatures during a multi-year marine heatwave (MHW) and sharp population declines of the keystone predator Pisaster ochraceus due to sea star wasting disease (SSWD). We measured the community structure before, during and after the MHW onset and SSWD outbreak in a 19-year succession and species interaction experiment conducted in a rocky intertidal meta-ecosystem spanning 13 sites on four capes in Oregon and northern California, United States. Kelp abundance declined during the MHW due to extreme temperatures, while gooseneck barnacle and mussel abundances increased due to reduced predation pressure after the loss of Pisaster from SSWD. Using several methods, we detected regime shifts from substrate- or algae-dominated to invertebrate-dominated alternative states at two capes. After water temperatures cooled and Pisaster population densities recovered, community structure differed from pre-disturbance conditions, suggesting low resilience. Consequently, thermal stress and predator loss can result in regime shifts that fundamentally alter community structure even after restoration of baseline conditions. Despite changes in community structure, species diversity has recovered at most study sites. Jobs and Internships and Career Events City of Corvallis Recruitment! Internship - Environmental Consulting Location: Portland, OR Practice Area: Technology and Innovation (Environmental Geochemistry) Compensation:  $22.00 / hour   What Is the Opportunity? Anchor QEA is seeking interns across a broad range of practice areas for our 2025 Internship Program. We will require interns to regularly come into an office and potentially perform field and/or laboratory work, depending on project needs. Interns will experience a combination of hands-on work that includes a defined project within their scope of study, as well as the opportunity for exposure to other service areas within our firm. Work will include office-based duties (e.g., computer) as may also involve field and/or laboratory work. There will be opportunities to work with senior- and principal-level professionals, assisting with project-related tasks and gaining insight into the world of professional consulting.  Interns will have a solid understanding of environmental consulting at the conclusion of the program.   What Are We Looking For? * Current undergraduate or graduate students majoring in a field related to one of our areas of expertise: * Engineering (coastal, geotechnical, environmental, civil, etc.) * Environmental Sciences (chemistry, biology, ecology, marine science, etc.) * Planning and Restoration (urban design, landscape architecture, sustainability, historic preservation, etc.) * Technology and Innovation (data science, geospatial science, environmental geochemistry, etc.) * Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel * Excellent verbal and written communication skills * Ability to interpret and apply technical information * Excellent organizational skills * Project management mindset to effectively manage priorities and meet deadlines * Desire to work collaboratively with others to accomplish goals * Balance of a professional attitude while having fun What Are the Responsibilities? Deliver a defined capstone project that will be developed based on assigned work with assistance from senior engineers, scientists, planners, and other professionals. To support this goal, interns may be asked to: * Support implementation of remedial investigations/feasibility studies and design evaluations * Conduct research and analysis around prospective clients, trends, strategies, industries, activation needs, etc. * Assist with field planning, data analysis, and report writing * Assist with research and data entry for new business initiatives * Partner to complete field sampling activities in-water and/or on land, project field documentation and supporting preparation of figures and tables for project deliverables * Conduct field activities, including collection of sediment, soil, water, air, waste, or biota samples or other field tasks * Conduct laboratory work using a variety of wet chemistry techniques for studies such as bench-scale treatability and porewater measurements via passive sampling technologies, including documentation and supporting preparation of figures and tables for project deliverables * Complete OSHA HAZWOPER training as required * Update documents, calendars, schedules, weekly statuses, etc.   What Is the Timeline for the 2025 Internship Program? * February 10 - February 21      Application submittal period * March 24-28                            Anchor QEA Internship Interview Day takes place in our offices nationwide * April 7- April 18                       Selected Candidates receive offers * May 20                                    Earliest start date for interns (subject to their availability)   Further details will be provided during the interview process.   What Can You Expect? The Corvallis weather forecast for Thursday morning (05:00 - 10:00 am) is for below freezing temperatures, a skiff of snow, followed by rain, which will freeze to form a glaze of ice on ground/road/sidewalk surfaces. Ice thickness projections range from 0.01 to 0.1 inch. It is anticipated that temperatures will warm during the day, but there is still a large amount of uncertainty as to when. Attached is a preparedness bulletin for posting/sharing to help inform people about extreme cold and ice safety. By calling 911 or 541-737-7000, OSU Assist will be dispatched in crisis situations that meet certain criteria. This could include instances of suicide ideation, substance abuse issues, survivors seeking support and welfare checks.
