Food has the power to heal us, to connect us, to make us stronger. Food solves hunger today by filling plates with nutritious meals. This year the need is greater than ever and, with your help, we can fight hunger! The rising cost of food and housing has increased food insecurity in Oregon, Southwest Washington and across the country. Last year, the Oregon Food Bank Network saw 1.9 million visits to food assistance sites - a 14% increase from the previous year. Food insecurity disproportionately affects specific communities in Oregon, regardless of geography. Today, 1 in 8 people face hunger in rural, urban, and suburban communities throughout the state. Washington Sea Grant Community Engaged Internship A paid, 10-week summer internship opportunity in coastal Washington state for undergraduate students in any field of study with an interest in coastal and marine sciences. The Sea Grant Community Engaged Internship (CEI) for Undergraduate Students aims to broaden participation in coastal, ocean, and marine sciences by providing training and mentorship to early-stage university and community college students. The goal of this paid internship program is to provide training and mentorship to the next generation of scientists, decision-makers and citizens. CEI students engage in place-based research, extension, education, and/or communication that respects and integrates local knowledge systems. The Washington Sea Grant (WSG) Community Engaged Intern will be part of a national cohort of students. In addition to working on the ground in Washington, the intern will also engage with other interns across the country through: * Participation in all CEI professional development and training opportunities * Virtual professional development sessions * Peer discussions with other interns in the cohort using Slack or other virtual platforms * A graduation ceremony to celebrate accomplishments, network with peers and other professionals * Participation in pre- and post-evaluation 2025 Details In 2025, the Washington Sea Grant Community Engaged Intern will work with the WSG Coastal Resilience Team and the Hazards Analysis and Resilience Planning Team at Washington State Emergency Management Division in supporting community-prioritized resilience efforts in coastal Washington. The intern will analyze existing data related to the community's reported economic and social impacts from coastal hazards (e.g. damages from flooding, severe weather, and climate change risk) to identify areas of high risk and community's priorities. This will help identify vulnerable areas that may need additional support to address coastal hazards and resilience issues. Compensation: $6000 Location: Flexible arrangement as agreed with the mentors upon selection, with options to be in an office in Seattle, Camp Murray, or South Bend, WA. The intern is expected to attend some field trips and meet with local partners in coastal Washington with the mentors. The intern is required to attend an all expenses paid in-person field experience from July 20-24 in North Carolina, hosted by North Carolina Sea Grant. Hiring summer field and lab tech

Hi everyone, My team is looking to hire a student for field and lab work on two related projects emphasizing water quality and algae/rooted aquatic plant growth. This student will conduct field work and lab work alongside other researchers on two related projects from May to August of 2025. You will be trained for all work activities and will be required to participate (free of charge) in first aid/CPR and field safety training. Project 1: We will explore how wildfire severity influences the rate of change, duration, and magnitude of dissolved oxygen changes in rivers that receive wildfire ash input. Most of this work will take place in a laboratory setting with occasional low-intensity field work involved to collect soil and water samples. Work will include operating a drying oven and muffle furnace and requires attention to detail in recording and handling samples and data. The project is expected to run from June to August and will require less than 10 hours a week. Project 2: We are embarking on our third year of a study evaluating the drivers of algae and rooted aquatic plant growth on the Klamath River following dam removal. This will take place from May to August and will include three-day field campaigns to northern California every two weeks. This work will involve light kayaking, wading, snorkeling, algae/plant identification, and overnight camping at campgrounds. Conditions will be HOT, at times buggy, and physically challenging, and we work long hours. But it is also the most fun I've ever had doing field work.
