The City of Albany, Oregon, has one opening for the summer of 2024 for a GIS intern. The position will split time between the GIS department and Water Quality Services. Work will consist of assisting the GIS department in day-to-day operation and maintaining stormwater GIS databases and collecting field data. The position provides opportunities in professional growth and mentorship, foundational GIS technical skills, exposure to GIS technology and data processing techniques. Responsibilities: * Collaborate with a team on a variety of GIS projects * Design, create, analyze and maintain citywide GIS databases and datasets * Create effective and easy to read maps using ArcGIS software for paper and the web * Help develop geoprocessing automation models using related GIS software tools to update, maintain and analyze databases to ensure spatial integrity * Collect data in the field using ArcGIS mobile data collection tools * Manipulate geospatial data with great attention to detail and efficiency * Help provide technical GIS assistance to GIS users at the city * Assist in the implementation of MS4/TMDL programs. * Safely wade in streams and storm channels, traverse stream, and creek banks. * Navigate difficult terrain including creeks, streams, up and down stream banks, etc. * Perform duties as necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position. * Comply with Safety Requirements including wearing proper safety equipment as required by OSHA and City policy. Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Effective oral and written communication skills and professionalism * Maintain productivity while performing multiple tasks * Capacity to work well in collaborative environment, and show flexibility with assignments * Show an interest in the geospatial field * Desire to learn new skills * Ability to listen to and receive constructive criticism * Maintain good working relationships with staff * Capable of adhering to an established, consistent works schedule and arriving to work on time * Understanding of water quality field sampling, ArcGIS Apps (Survey 123, Story Maps, Dashboards, Workforce). Qualifications: * Must be accepted with intent to enroll or enrolled in a full time College or University program. Preferred major in Environmental Science, Geography, GIS, Hydrology/Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental Engineering, or other science field. * Must have a valid driver's license. * Must be able to successfully complete a post-offer substance abuse test and background investigation. Period of Employment: This is a temporary position, 40 hours max per week, not to exceed 12 weeks. Start and end date are between June 1 and September 30, 2024. You can expect a weekly workload ranging between 30-40 hours/week. The work schedule is weekday, but also will include occasional early morning starts. All work performed during daylight hours. Compensation: $18-$21/hour dependent on skills and experience 75% of the time you will be in the office: You will be extensively using environmental mapping tools such as topographic maps, digital maps, mapping software and database applications. A working knowledge of ArcGIS software, familiarity with raster and vector data, and Aerial image interpretation will make you stand out! 25% of the time you will spend in the field: You will assist the water quality team in collecting spatial data and conducting storm sewer outfall inventory (Outfall Reconnaissance Inventory (ORI)), as part of the City's Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE) program. OSU Energy Efficiency Center Would you be interested in an on-campus job working with industry clients to reduce energy use and improve productivity, while applying what you are learning in your classes? The OSU Energy Efficiency Center (EEC) is looking for motivated student energy analysts to work part-time during the school year (10-20 hrs/week) and during the summer (~40 hrs/week). The OSU EEC offers comprehensive, student-led, on-site energy and productivity assessments to small and medium-sized manufacturers through a US Department of Energy funded program. Student teams advised by engineering faculty visit manufacturers and seek ways to increase their productivity and reduce energy use and waste. These engineering analyses and improvement recommendations are compiled into a report and delivered to the client. It is a great way to see many different industrial processes and learn about ways to save energy.
