Hi all, Apologies for the change of plan - our speaker has had an emergency and won't be able to join us this morning. We will need to reschedule her visit for another time. Since we already have the Interzone order in, and some folks may have proposals they were keen to work on, anyone who is interested should still feel free to gather in Covell Hall 221 at 10am. I am happy to help as I'm able with questions you were wanting to cover at the workshop. I also wanted to take this opportunity to distribute a short survey - PRAx was interested in feedback on the recent Huang Yi and Kuka visit, and I'm happy to hear some aspirational visiting robotics seminar speaker ideas for consideration in the future. Here is the brief survey: https://forms.gle/8xA52zRAXQqVLATP6<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2F8xA52zRAXQqVLATP6&data=05%7C02%7Crobotics-seminar%40engr.oregonstate.edu%7C68280212db5b4513d19208dd001d6dc5%7Cce6d05e13c5e4d6287a84c4a2713c113%7C0%7C0%7C638666848564730994%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=svQOCDlTYZyPO1EoGvqrvuwH5EQ5Ffks6xDKgk3FMmg%3D&reserved=0>. See you then, at 10am in Covell Hall 221. Flyer attached! For best results, come to the workshop with some type of proposal or research dissemination task in mind (e.g., large robotics research grant, fellowship, SBIR award, outreach effort in development - think about what is helpful to you!) and use the experience to develop broader impacts ideas related to these research efforts. Buzo Tipton (an expert on thinking through broader impacts plans for grants proposals/outreach efforts/education and more!) for our Friday seminar. As a reminder, everyone is expected to come to the seminar. We’ve got a strict no-device policy. We also have, as always, coffee and coffee cake. For the fall, we have Covell Hall 221 as our seminar location, with the usual timing of 10am Fridays. Please plan to head there each Friday at 10am. Looking forward to the seminar! See you there. This interactive workshop will introduce key topics and questions for ensuring that the work you are engaged in considers the implications of possible barriers to entry and identifying opportunities for integrating access, belonging, and success into your efforts. Concretely for those engaged in robotics research, this line of thinking will help you articulate the broader impacts of your work, something that many researchers will need to do when writing (for example) proposals for the National Science Foundation and other funding bodies, in addition to supporting the development of useful outreach related to research efforts. For best results, come to the workshop with some type of proposal or research dissemination task in mind (e.g., large robotics research grant, fellowship, SBIR award, outreach effort in development - think about what is helpful to you!) and use the experience to develop ideas for these research efforts. Bio: Dr. Carina M. Buzo Tipton (she/her) is the assistant director for DEI education in the office of institutional diversity. Her published works reach across many topics including institutional DEI curriculum, sexual assault education and consent work, carceral institutional critique, trauma informed pedagogies, Chicanx/Latine gender and sexuality, and student development. Carina’s research and scholarship focus on institutional change, where she argues that if there are critiques of the institution, there must also be solutions, and where there is institutional harm, there must also be healing.
