Robotics seminar 10/13: Four Talks about Robots (IROS Edition)

Roboticists, We did pretty well with IROS papers this year. Come and hear about some of the awesome work that Robotics Program members presented at IROS, while you enjoy the usual coffee and cake. This week, we have four short talks representing the diversity of research that we do here in the Robotics Program. All of these talks present work that recently appeared in the Internation Conference on Robots and Systems (IROS 2023). - Parallelized Control-Aware Motion Planning with Learned Controller Proxies, Chow, Chang, and Hollinger. - Hand Design Approach for Planar Fully Actuated Manipulators, Nave, DuFrene, Davidson, and Grimm. - Robottheory Fitness: GoBot’s Engagement Edge for Spurring Physical Activity in Young Children, Mayoral, Helmi, Warren, Logan, and Fitter. - Geometric Gait Optimization for Interia-Dominated Systems with Nonzero Net Momentum, Yang and Hatton.

Robotics Seminar 10/6: Cindy Grimm (Oregon State University)

Roboticists, Welcome to Week 1 of a new term. As is our tradition, the first seminar of the term will be a State of the Program presentation by our Robotics Program Director, Cindy Grimm. Dr. Grimm will talk about where the program is, and where it’s headed. She will also take any program-related questions you might have. As a reminder, everyone is expected to come to the seminar. We’ve got a strict no-device policy, but we also have coffee, tea, and cake. We’re still in KEC 1001 for this week. cheers -- Bill State of the Robotics Program Cindy Grimm, Oregon State University Abstract: We, the robots... or rather, the robotics program, will do a short (15-20min) review of who we are and what we do, followed by a Q&A led by the Robotics Graduate Student Association. Bio: Cindy Grimm works in the area of robotic grasping and manipulation for both industry and agriculture, as well as ethics, law and policy related to robotics. Her background is in Computer Graphics, Visualization, and Human-robot interaction. She received her PhD from Brown University in 1995 in the area of surface modeling, spent two years working at Microsoft Research on facial animation, then ten years as faculty in Computer Science at Washington University in St. Louis. She is now at Oregon State University as a member of the Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute.

Week 0 Special Robotics Seminar 9/29: What is this mysterious RGSA you speak of?

Roboticists, Welcome to another academic year. I’ll be sending out a more complete listing of the upcoming seminars shortly, but this week we’re going to use the seminar slot to (re-)introduce you to the Robotics Grad Student Association. The seminar has been put In Kelley this term, but we’re working to have it moved to somewhere closer. However, for Week 0, go ahead and make the trek to KEC 1001 at 10am. This seminar will be most useful for students new to the program, but please also show up if you’ve been here a while, so that you can meet the new cohort, introduce yourself, and share your wisdom cheers -- Bill What is this mysterious RGSA you speak of? RGSA Officers Abstract: Being a student is tough. Being a robotics student is tougher. Being a robotics student with no support is toughest. RGSA is here to help make it less tough. This seminar, we will introduce this year's RGSA board, discuss what RGSA is, along with its role in supporting the robotics grad students. We will also go over some initial event ideas for the coming quarter, conclude with a small tour of Graf for any new students.

It brings together new advancements in artificial intelligence, computer vision, sensor technology, and voice and edge computing in a package that’s designed to be helpful and convenient. Dr. Moore will talk about Astro, consumer robotics at Lab126, and Amazon’s University Partnership Programs. *Bio: *Dr. Darnell Moore is an engineer with broad and deep expertise ranging from embedded [processing and computer vision to machine learning. With more than two decades in research and development, he is a proven technical leader and disciplined manager with a track record of productive collaboration, new product development, and technical program management. In his current role, he is driving the global strategy for one of Amazon's University Partnership programs. Prior to Amazon, Darnell was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff (DMTS) at Texas Instruments, where he managed and directed one of TI's most talented R&D Labs focusing on sensor fusion and environmental modeling for ADAS, autonomous vehicles and robotics. DMTS title holders are elected by peers and represent no more than 2% of TI'seligible technical population.

Special Robotics Seminar 8/2: Darnell Moore (Amazon Lab126)

Roboticists, Two seminars this week, starting with a specially-scheduled one with Dr. Darnell Moore for Amazon Lab126. Dr. Moore will talk about the Astro home robot, consumer robotics at Amazon's Lab126, and about the University Partnership Program that he leads. 10am, Rogers 230. The seminar will run for 30 minutes, and then there will be an hour for grad students to interact with Dr. Moore. Coffee, tea, and cake are additional reasons to come. I'd also consider it a personal favor if we fill the room for this one. Darnell is one of my colleagues at Lab126, and he's here as the first step towards building a relationship between Amazon and OSU. If we can fill the room and reach our customary levels of awesomeness, this will tangibly help build this relationship.
