A climate-friendly alternative to diesel generators, Radiant's Kaleidos 1MW microreactor will be the world's first portable, zero-emissions power source that works anywhere. We plan to test our development reactor by 2026 and if successful, it will be the first new commercial reactor design to achieve a fueled test in over 50 years. Our microreactor can bring power to remote parts of the world and provide backup power for life-saving applications in hospitals or disaster-relief scenarios. Our last prototype, Trenta, completed 10,000 high-power pulses and reached plasma temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius (9 keV). At Helion, our internship program places you at the core of fusion technology development, giving you hands-on experience with impactful projects and close collaboration with industry experts. Throughout the summer, you'll take on meaningful responsibilities that directly contribute to the future of clean energy. With the support of experienced managers and mentors, you'll gain insights into our fast-paced operations, taking full ownership of your work while pushing innovation forward. All internships take place onsite at our headquarters in Everett, WA. What You Will Be Doing: At Helion, our Radiation Safety and Nuclear Sciences (RaSNS) team plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safe development of fusion technology. As an intern and part of the Radiation Safety Program (RaSP), you'll be hands-on in supporting critical projects and day-to-day tasks aimed at enhancing safety practices. Working alongside our health physicists, you'll help monitor and control radiation sources, ensuring a safe workplace through advanced dosimetry, bioassay, and materials analysis. You'll also collaborate on the development of procedures that drive forward key projects that require the use or production of radioactive materials. If you're eager to make a real impact in fusion energy and work in a fast-paced industrial and lab setting, join a team that thrives on challenges and innovation! You Will: * Create a permanent radiation waste storage and transfer area * Create a database that calculates current waste activity vs initial activity at storage * Perform periodic contamination and dose surveys for radiation areas * Assist in radioactive material shipping and receiving * Monitor personnel dosimetry * Assist in neutron monitoring and calculations * Apply health physics principles in an environment involving tritium Required Skills: * Ability to work full time, onsite in Everett, WA for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks during summer 2025 * Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Graduate (Master's or PhD) degree in Radiation Health Physics, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related field * GPA of 3.0 or above * Basic understanding of radiation/health physics * Ability to work comfortably around radioactive materials * Ability to complete basic radiation calculations, such as activity decay assessment or dose calculation * Experience creating a viable SOP and performing surveys Base Pay: * Bachelors/Master's: $29 / hour * PhD: $31 / hour #LI-Onsite #LI-KL1 Compensation and Benefits At Helion, we are committed to fostering an equitable environment in every aspect of our operations, including compensation. Recommended dress is business casual. The Engineering Connections Fair is a targeted student engagement event. Students majoring in BEE, CBEE, EECS, MIME and NSE from all levels (first year-PhD) are invited, creating a broad audience. All engineering students are encouraged and welcome to attend. Review the employer list to learn about the participating employers, see majors they hiring for jobs and internships and decide what sessions you want to attend in advance so you are prepared. Participants complete a cutting-edge research project at one of the Department's National Laboratories or DOE Headquarters in support of the Department's mission of minimizing the environmental and climate impacts of fossil fuels and industrial processes while working to achieve net-zero emissions. MLEF participants are mentored by DOE scientists and engineers while completing a research project over the course of the summer. At the end of the program, participants present their research findings at the MLEF Technical Forum. During the 10-week appointment, Fellows receive a weekly stipend, and may be eligible to receive travel and housing assistance. The mission of the MLEF Program is to strengthen a diverse pipeline of future STEM professionals. This program has mentored over 1000 students from across the nation.
