The application deadline is May 21, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. EDT. Through SULI and CCI, undergraduate students and recent graduates discover science and technology careers at the DOE national laboratories and gain new knowledge, skills, and experience to further their educational and career goals. Interns work directly with national laboratory scientists, engineers, and technical professionals, assisting them on research or technical projects that support the DOE mission. SULI is open to full-time students attending either 2-or 4-year colleges and universities or recent graduates within two years of receiving their bachelor's degree or associate degree, while CCI is exclusively for community college students. Both programs are stipend-based and offered three times annually in fall, spring, and summer terms. Internship - Fuel Performance Modeling Engineer El Segundo, California, United States Apply Radiant is an El-Segundo, CA-based clean energy startup building a nuclear microreactor. A climate-friendly alternative to diesel generators, Radiant's Kaleidos 1MW microreactor will be the world's first portable, zero-emissions power source that works anywhere. We plan to test our development reactor by 2026 and if successful, it will be the first new commercial reactor design to achieve a fueled test in over 50 years. Radiant's goal is to bring one of the world's first factory-constructed microreactors to market. Our microreactor can bring power to remote parts of the world and provide backup power for life-saving applications in hospitals or disaster-relief scenarios. Internship - Fuel Performance Modeling Engineer Radiant is seeking a highly motivated Fuel Performance Modeling Intern for Summer 2025. Under the software team, you will provide modeling and simulation support to the materials team along with ensuring the seamless integration of software solutions into material research and analysis. You will develop and refine TRISO fuel performance models using the BISON code for neutron irradiation experiments. You will directly contribute to advancing our nuclear fuel reliability through predicting probabilistic failure mechanisms. You'll learn from a direct mentor, cross-functional teammates, and have a tangible impact on improving Kaleidos' fuel performance assessments that will enable Kaleidos' successful entrance into the market. Responsibilities and Duties: * Own the fuel performance modeling of the RAFT irradiation experiment. * Develop BISON TRISO fuel performance models, executing BISON fuel performance models, and post-processing the results to feed a reduced order model of TRISO failure. * Create and document predictions for observables of the RAFT experiment, including but not limited to prediction of radionuclide release rates as a function of time. * Assess output uncertainties of the BISON fuel performance model. * Present a final project review at the end of internship to engineers and leadership. Required Skills and Qualifications: * Currently pursuing BS in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or related discipline. * At least 1 year of experience in BISON TRISO fuel performance modeling. Desired Skills and Qualifications: * Currently pursuing a M.S./Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or related discipline. * A high level of independence in solving challenging engineering tasks is preferred. * Ability to seek out resources and proactively ask questions to finish projects through completion effectively, accurately, and timely. * Genuinely excited for our mission to rapidly deploy nuclear microreactors to remote locations requiring abundant, clean energy. * Hands on project examples outside of the classroom such as extracurricular projects, clubs, research, lab work or personal projects. * Prior internship experience helpful but not required. * Ability to work in a fast-paced startup environment with a proactive and collaborative attitude.
