Benefits * Stipends * Undergraduate students: starting at $700/week * Graduate students and postgraduates: starting at $750/week * Inbound/Outbound Travel: Up to $1,000 for participants who relocate more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned hosting site. * Other allowances: Depending on your project assignment, duration of appointment and funding availability, you may be eligible to receive an allowance for travel and training to promote the educational goals of your appointment. Location * Opportunities may be available at DOE Headquarters in Washington DC, and DOE Field Offices and other participating DOE sites across the nation. * Some appointments in 2025 may be offered virtually. Duration * Appointments duration may depend on the availability of the participant and the hosting facility. * Appointments can start at any time during the year at the discretion of the DOE sponsoring office. Appointment extensions may be granted based on the needs of the sponsoring office and the candidate's availability. Nature of Appointment The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Documents must have all social security numbers, student identification numbers, and/or dates of birth removed (blanked out, blackened out, made illegible, etc.) prior to uploading into the application system. * Academic or Professional Recommendation - You are encouraged to request a recommendation from a professional who can speak to your abilities and potential for success as well as your scientific capabilities and personal characteristics. Recommenders will be asked to complete a recommendation in Zintellect. Recommendations submitted via email will not be accepted. Qualifications The DOE Scholars Program is open to all students and recent graduates who meet the following qualifications: * Be a U.S. Citizen. * Be 18 years of age or older. * Meet one of the following conditions: * Be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an U.S. accredited institute of higher education<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fope.ed.gov…>. * Have completed an undergraduate (B.A., B.S. or equivalent) or graduate (M.S., DVM, Ph.D., MD or equivalent) degree within five years of the desired start date. * Be a U.S. military Veteran who has been honorably discharged and/or who has been medically discharged because of a service-connected disability and who received a college degree in an appropriate discipline within ten years of the desired start date. * Have completed a qualifying certificate program within one year of the desired start date are also eligible for a postgraduate appointment. Internship Description: Join us in a paid internship to contribute to cutting-edge research on modeling molten salt infiltration into porous graphite. This project involves solving a two-phase flow problem using coupled Navier-Stokes and phase-field methods implemented within the MOOSE (Multiphysics Object-oriented Simulation Environment) framework. ???? Your Role: Debug and enhance the current model implementation in MOOSE Conduct verification cases using literature benchmarks Validate simulations with experimental results Document findings in a comprehensive report ???? Qualifications: Currently enrolled full-time in a Doctorate Degree Program at an accredited college/university studying Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or a related field Experience or coursework in fluid mechanics and finite element methods Knowledge of phase-field modeling Working experience with C++ programming Experience in MOOSE Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 Authorization to work in the U.S. (including CPT and OPT) ????
