Evans Family Graduate Fellowship: Call for Proposals Due March 7th
by MacCarty, Nordica 17 Jan '25

17 Jan '25
Greetings friends of humanitarian engineering, Thanks to the generous support from Dick and Gretchen Evans, it is time for the annual Spring call for proposals for the Evans Family Graduate Fellowships. This opportunity can provide between $2k and $10k of travel or stipend support for graduate students working on humanitarian related projects (details attached). The submission deadline this term is March 7th. If you know of graduate students within or outside the College of Engineering who meet the criteria, please do consider inviting them to apply. And of course, feel free to reach out with any questions. ~Nordica Nordica A. MacCarty, Ph.D. (she/her/hers) Associate Professor | Richard & Gretchen Evans Scholar of Humanitarian Engineering | School of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering | Oregon State University Executive Director | Aprovecho Research Center Office: 312 Rogers Hall | Mailing: 204 Rogers Hall | Corvallis, OR 97331 | Office: 541.737.5927

Evans Family Fellowship: New Recruiting Opportunity and Impact Report
by MacCarty, Nordica 06 Dec '23

06 Dec '23
Greetings faculty and friends of humanitarian engineering, I hope you are well as we approach the close of another term. I appreciate the sense of gratitude that comes with this time of year, both for the gifts of the past and opportunities for the future. As a part of that gratitude, I've been reflecting on all that we have accomplished together through the Evans Family Fellowship<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fengineeri…> program since it began in 2016. I recently prepared an impact report for Dick and Gretchen, and wanted to share it with you (attached) to highlight the extensive value this program has had on our students, our faculty, and our local and global partners. In short, we've been able to support 40 graduate students (68% female) from 11 different majors in their travels to 21 different countries. These students used their time and training to work toward providing solutions to the world’s most pressing problems in water, energy, and health through hands-on, cross-cultural, immersive collaborations. I'm so thankful to you for making these transformational opportunities possible. To build upon this success, I'd like to announce a new opportunity to use the Evans Fellowships as a recruiting tool for potential incoming graduate students this cycle. It is my thought that offering an Evans Fellowship within offer letters to our top candidates might enhance the prestige of the offer, thereby increasing the chances of that student selecting OSU for their degree program. I hope this will also allow the nominating faculty member to better budget and plan ahead for the student’s research program. The brief application process for this will be similar to the existing request for proposals, including a 1-page nomination letter and inclusion of the student's application package. Please watch your inbox for this opportunity by mid-January, and feel free to reach out to me with any questions or suggestions for this or the humanitarian engineering program in general. Happy holidays, ~Nordica Nordica A.
