Students will enroll in AGRI 499/599: Farming Systems and Pastoral Landscapes in New Zealand (3 cr.) The 2024 program in New Zealand (Sept. 10 - 24) is embedded within Fall Term course extension plus 5a: Sept. 11 - Nov. 2, 2024. (7 weeks) Course learning objectives: 1. Examine the characteristics of primary food production systems while identifying the potential opportunities and addressing the complex challenges inherent in food production within the context of New Zealand. 2. Analyze and evaluate pasture and confinement-based livestock production systems, assessing their economic, environmental, and social implications through comparative and contrasting methods. 3. Analyze the intricate relationship between plant growth and development in relation to environmental factors. 4. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of key terminology in grassland agriculture and critically examine commonly employed pasture grasses, legumes, and forbs, providing insightful insights into their characteristics and applications. 5. List strategies for reducing the impact of livestock farming on the environment 6. Examine the significance of data-driven decision-making practices in agricultural operations in contrast to reliance on personal opinions, highlighting the critical role of empirical evidence and analytics in guiding informed choices and strategies.
