Please visit the BEE advising webpage<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbee.oregonstate.edu%2Fbiological-and-ecological-engineering%2Fadvisors&data=05%7C02%7Cecoe-ungrads%40lists.engr.oregonstate.edu%7C2e9e4145920b4a3f1db308dcf76961ba%7Cce6d05e13c5e4d6287a84c4a2713c113%7C0%7C0%7C638657279211606664%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=9zhcILxKG6oeMgbDoOdy69S%2Bg99uPvAEvoiS044EUzY%3D&reserved=0> to review requirements and the advising guide. You don't have to wait until registration time to set up an appointment. As long as you have had a meeting this term and discussed future coursework, the advisor can issue you your PIN number via email when they become available. If you will have a lot to discuss in your meeting, it is a good idea to get in early. The College of Engineering and College of Science offer free peer tutoring for a wide variety of courses. NEW! Mentorship Program Welcome to the start of the year with the BEE community! We have an exciting new program for our Ecological Engineering undergraduates starting this year thanks to input from our Alumni during exit interviews and BEE Department Head's, Dr. Adam Ward, excitement to invest in every students success while studying with us and beyond. We would like to invite you all to participate in the Biological & Ecological Engineering Mentor Collective Program. When you sign up for this program, you will be matched with an alumni mentor. A mentor can provide additional support and guidance because they have been where you are now. To get started, register and complete a short survey (this will take you only 3 minutes!) telling us about yourself, and we will match you with a mentor with similar interests and backgrounds and what's important to you. An outgrowth of immense investment in scientific research initiated by the U.S. Government during World War II, the National Laboratories have served as the leading institutions for scientific innovation in the United States for more than seventy years. The Energy Department's 17 National Labs tackle the critical scientific challenges of our time -- from combating climate change to discovering the origins of our universe -- and possess unique instruments and facilities, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. They address large scale, complex research and development challenges with a multidisciplinary approach that places an emphasis on translating basic science to innovation Coping with Election Stress<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fevents.oregonstate.edu%2Fevent%2Fcoping-with-election-stress-3534&data=05%7C02%7Cecoe-ungrads%40lists.engr.oregonstate.edu%7C2e9e4145920b4a3f1db308dcf76961ba%7Cce6d05e13c5e4d6287a84c4a2713c113%7C0%7C0%7C638657279212856631%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=ozYx2zZO4Z5y4beJEtj7yYUeh4QQIO8aKFKIK%2FIVSBg%3D&reserved=0> When: Tuesday, October 29 - 12pm Where: Virtual Event<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fosu.lyrahealth.com%2Flogin%3Freferrer_section%3DMy%2520Events%26from%3DEvents&data=05%7C02%7Cecoe-ungrads%40lists.engr.oregonstate.edu%7C2e9e4145920b4a3f1db308dcf76961ba%7Cce6d05e13c5e4d6287a84c4a2713c113%7C0%7C0%7C638657279212856631%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=Z0bOc%2BGeXpkk%2BKIa0G9WqHNehVdKeSvLpV5MvtRe%2FPs%3D&reserved=0> For many people, election season feels full of tension, nerves, and uncertainty. Wakefield Professor of Ocean Fishery Sciences When: Wednesday, October 30 - 6:00pm-7:00pm Where: 2030 SE Marine Science Drive, Newport, OR 97365 Anyone who walks on the beach notices the flotsam and jetsam the tide brings in: seaweeds, shells, sticks and jellies are common findings, as are the less desirables, from marine debris to bird carcasses. In fact, some seasons are especially "birdy" on Oregon beaches. Beach-goers occasionally find tens, even hundreds, of carcasses per kilometer. What's going on!?! Should we be worried? In this talk, Dr. Julia Parrish, the Executive Director of the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team, and the Lowell A. and Frankie L. Wakefield Professor of Ocean Fishery Sciences at the University of Washington, tells some scary stories about how Pacific Northwest seabirds have gotten into hot water, uncovering the mystery of how a warming ocean can wreak havoc on seabird communities, and exploring who wins and who loses. Wakefield Professor of Ocean Fishery Sciences, College of the Environment, University of Washington Where: 2030 SE Marine Science Dr, Newport, OR 97365 Three decades ago, the Exxon Valdez ran aground killing hundreds of thousands of Common Murres, creating one of the largest environment disasters the Northeast Pacific had experienced. Thirty years later, murres and their Alcid relatives are threatened with starvation and reproductive failure brought on by broad-scale ocean warming. Alaskan murre populations have already lost millions of birds. Analysis of beached bird data spanning 30 years of monitoring suggest that predictable seasonal patterns in beached bird abundance are severely disrupted following major marine heatwave events. Event magnitude, duration and spatial extent are all positively associated with increased temperatures. When considered at the scale of a large marine ecosystem, the seabird community sustains multiple losses, with effects lasting at least three years. This talk will explore causality of the association between warmer waters and seabird mortality, and implications of these changes, while simultaneously uncovering who collects these data and how that might ultimately make a positive difference to Pacific Northwest coastal ecosystems. Nearshore ocean conditions are changing along the west coast of North America. These recent shifts in ocean drivers have contributed to broad-scale impacts to marine and estuarine habitats, including unfortunate consequences for several of Oregon's marine Species of Greatest Conservation Need. This talk will summarize ongoing work to characterize the current status and historic changes to the complex community of bull kelp, abalone, sea urchins, and sea stars within Oregon's rocky reef habitats. Considered together, the magnitude of ecological change is unprecedented in recorded history. Do the current communities represent a shifting baseline or "new normal" for Oregon's rocky reef habitats? Or will they continue to respond and adapt into an alternative stable-state? An update on the latest monitoring data and a new eruption forecast for this submarine volcano offshore Oregon. Axial Seamount is an active submarine volcano located ~300 miles offshore Oregon that has erupted 3 times in the last 30 years, making it the most active volcano in the Pacific Northwest. It is monitored in real-time by seafloor instruments connected to a cabled observatory. Since the most recent eruption in 2015, the rate of re-inflation and magma supply was initially high, but it gradually slowed and by the summer of 2023 it had nearly stopped, suggesting maybe the volcano was going to sleep. However, in the last year, the rate of inflation and the number of earthquakes has dramatically increased, suggesting that Axial has now re-awakened and is building to its next eruption. This talk will describe the most recent monitoring data and its implications for forecasting the next eruption.
