Program - The hunt for the Earth's oldest ice: where science and engineering meet.

Synopsis:

On geological timescales Earth's climate has always been changing, from ice-free "hothouse" climates with palm trees in Antarctica, to Ice Age climates during which much of North America was covered by large ice sheets. Ice cores drilled in Greenland and Antarctica provide a unique opportunity to study these past climate changes and better understand the sensitivity and dynamics of Earth's climate. Importantly, ice cores preserve bubbles of air that can be used to reconstruct the composition of the atmosphere back in time. The oldest continuous Antarctic ice core goes back 800,000 years in time. There is an ongoing international effort to locate and drill Earth's Oldest ice to extend the ice core record further back in time. I will present some of the highlights of ice core research over the last few decades. Then I will talk about current efforts to find Earth's oldest ice in Antarctica, including the US effort that is based at Oregon State University. Last, I will show some of the different kinds of exciting ongoing engineering work that are critical in making this work possible.

Bio:

Christo Buizert is an Associate Professor in the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. In his research he uses ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica to reconstruct past climatic and environmental conditions on Earth going back millions of years. Some of the topics the studies are Earth's Ice Age cycles, past abrupt climate change, and the composition of Earth's atmosphere in the past. He has participated in multiple research expeditions to both Greenland and Antarctica to collect ancient ice samples.
