NEW! Mentorship Program
Welcome to the start of the year with the BEE community! We have an exciting new program for our Ecological Engineering undergraduates starting this year thanks to input from our Alumni during
exit interviews and BEE Department Head’s, Dr. Adam Ward, excitement to invest in every students success while studying with us and beyond.
We would like to invite you all to participate in the
Biological & Ecological Engineering Mentor Collective Program. When you sign up for this program, you will be matched with an alumni mentor. A mentor can provide additional support and guidance because they have been where you are now.
To get started, register and complete a short survey (this will take you only 3 minutes!) telling us about yourself, and we will match you with a mentor with similar interests and backgrounds and
what’s important to you.
Click
here to register and complete your survey
Once you complete that survey, you can expect an email from the Mentor Collective team with more information – be sure to check it out, and do not hesitate to reach out to Jennifer Cohen in either
the main office (Gilmore 116) or her email at Jennifer.cohen@oregonstate.edu
or reach out to the Mentor Collective directly at help@mentorcollective.org.

HMSC
Research Seminar – How Climate Change Impacts a Coastal Tropical Dolphin?
Speaker:
Dr. Rodrigo Tardin, Professor, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
When:
Thursday, October 24 – 3:30pm-4:30pm
Where:
2030 SE Marine Science Dr, Newport, OR 97365
Climate change impacts coastal and marine ecosystems through warming, acidification,
and deoxygenation. These effects are expected to intensify without substantial mitigation efforts. In tropical regions, rising ocean temperatures may push marine species, such as coastal cetaceans, to their thermal limits, leading to species redistributions
and cascading effects on community and ecosystem dynamics. In this talk, I will share the results of the most comprehensive datasets of occurrences for Guiana dolphins from systematic boat-based surveys conducted between 1987 and 2023, across seven countries.
Guiana dolphins face unprecedented challenges from ongoing multiple and cumulative human activities, which are likely to be exacerbated by climate change over the next four decades. We built ensemble Species Distribution Models (SDM) to predict future distributions
under the latest CMIP6 projected scenarios: optimistic (SSP1-2.6), intermediate (SSP2-4.5), and pessimistic (SSP5-8.5). Expert knowledge was used to validate model predictions. We ask here i) how different climate change scenarios will affect Guiana dolphin
distribution? and ii) how the current Marine Protected Area (MPA) network may protect dolphins in the present and future? Our study contributes to ongoing efforts to understand the potential effects of projected climate change scenarios on coastal tropical
marine predators.

Science
on Tap: Presented by the Hatfield Marine Science Center
Topic: “What the Tide Brings In: Scary Stories about Hot Water”
Speaker: Julia Parrish, Lowell A. & Frankie L. Wakefield Professor of Ocean Fishery Sciences
When: Wednesday, October 30 – 6:00pm-7:00pm
Where: 2030 SE Marine Science Drive, Newport, OR 97365
Anyone who walks on the beach notices the flotsam and jetsam the tide brings in: seaweeds, shells, sticks and jellies are common findings, as are the less desirables, from marine debris to bird carcasses.
In fact, some seasons are especially "birdy" on Oregon beaches. Beach-goers occasionally find tens, even hundreds, of carcasses per kilometer.
What's going on!?! Should we be worried?
In this talk, Dr. Julia Parrish, the Executive Director of the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team, and the Lowell A. and Frankie L. Wakefield Professor of Ocean Fishery Sciences at the University
of Washington, tells some scary stories about how Pacific Northwest seabirds have gotten into hot water, uncovering the mystery of how a warming ocean can wreak havoc on seabird communities, and exploring who wins and who loses.
When: Thursday, October 31 – 3:30pm-4:30pm
Speaker: Julia Parrish, Lowell A. and Frankie L. Wakefield Professor of Ocean Fishery Sciences, College of the Environment, University of Washington
Where: 2030 SE Marine Science Dr, Newport, OR 97365
Three decades ago, the Exxon Valdez ran aground killing hundreds of thousands of Common Murres, creating one of the largest environment disasters the Northeast Pacific had experienced. Thirty years
later, murres and their Alcid relatives are threatened with starvation and reproductive failure brought on by broad-scale ocean warming. Alaskan murre populations have already lost millions of birds. Analysis of beached bird data spanning 30 years of monitoring
suggest that predictable seasonal patterns in beached bird abundance are severely disrupted following major marine heatwave events. Event magnitude, duration and spatial extent are all positively associated with increased temperatures. When considered at the
scale of a large marine ecosystem, the seabird community sustains multiple losses, with effects lasting at least three years. This talk will explore causality of the association between warmer waters and seabird mortality, and implications of these changes,
while simultaneously uncovering who collects these data and how that might ultimately make a positive difference to Pacific Northwest coastal ecosystems.
Elections
& Emotions: Post Election Day
When:
Wednesday, November 13 – 5:00pm-6:30pm
Where: Memorial Union Building (MU), MU 208, 2501 SW Jefferson Way, Corvallis OR 97331
This will be a Community Dialogue around Elections, where students are invited to share their emotions, feelings, thoughts, and experiences related to this
year’s elections. The purpose of the event is for students, staff, and faculty to come to a safe and welcoming space where they will be able to express themselves, listen to others, and build community, both before and after elections. Folks will engage in
thought-provoking conversations with peers about the impact of elections on our lives and communities. Before the elections, we'll provide valuable tips and resources to help you prepare effectively and help relieve anxiety. After the elections, we will gather
to be in the community and discuss how it feels to be safe and supported moving forward.
