NEW! Mentorship Program
Welcome to the start of the year with the BEE community! We have an exciting new program for our Ecological Engineering undergraduates starting this year thanks to input from our Alumni during
exit interviews and BEE Department Head’s, Dr. Adam Ward, excitement to invest in every students success while studying with us and beyond.
We would like to invite you all to participate in the
Biological & Ecological Engineering Mentor Collective Program. When you sign up for this program, you will be matched with an alumni mentor. A mentor can provide additional support and guidance because they have been where you are now.
To get started, register and complete a short survey (this will take you only 3 minutes!) telling us about yourself, and we will match you with a mentor with similar interests and backgrounds and
what’s important to you.
Click
here to register and complete your survey
Once you complete that survey, you can expect an email from the Mentor Collective team with more information – be sure to check it out, and do not hesitate to reach out to Jennifer Cohen in either
the main office (Gilmore 116) or her email at Jennifer.cohen@oregonstate.edu
or reach out to the Mentor Collective directly at help@mentorcollective.org.

Topic: Fisheries
climate adaptation: case studies for broadbill swordfish and red abalone
This
talk will present two case studies investigating the effects of climate change on commercially important fisheries species. First, we focus on links between the rapidly warming East Australian Current and the prevalence of Kudoa sp. infection in broadbill
swordfish, leading to myoliquefaction (‘jellymeat’) of the flesh. By combining molecular techniques, microscopy, and dynamic spatiotemporal modeling, we developed predictions, forecasts and climate projections of high-risk areas within the fishery, to help
minimize wastage and improve sustainability of the industry. Second, we focus on red abalone, by defining and mapping climate refugia within the California Current. By integrating measures of physiological stress in response to environmental conditions with
output from dynamically downscaled climate models, we will identify potential refugia that are most conducive to facilitating the persistence of abalone under changing ocean conditions.

Research Seminar – Breaking Barriers Below the Surface: Navigating Challenges and Solutions for Accessible Marine Science
When:
Thursday, May 29 – 3:30pm-4:30pm
Speaker:
Reilly E. Boyt, Found and CEO of Disabilities Within Ocean Sciences (DWOS) and Graduate Student in the Big Fish Lab
Where:
Hatfield Marine Science Center, 2030 SE Marine Science Dr., Newport, OR 97365
Topic: Breaking
Barriers Below the Surface: Navigating Challenges and Solutions for Accessible Marine Science
Though
1 in 4 people in the US and 20-25% of the global population are disabled, STEM fields- especially marine sciences- witness a substantial underrepresentation of disabled individuals; disabled individuals make up only 3% of those in STEM- 75% less than in any
other industry. This disparity is largely due to inaccessibility, inadequate accommodations, and a prevalent culture of ableism in STEM. While recent efforts to foster inclusivity in the scientific community have made progress in some arenas, disabled marine
scientists continue to be excluded from vital conversations and initiatives aimed at increasing representation. To truly change our field, it is crucial to identify and address the unique challenges faced by disabled scientists. In order to catalyze this change,
OSU graduate student Reilly Boyt, founded Disabilities Within Ocean Sciences (DWOS), a non-profit organization aimed at providing a network and resources for disabled marine scientists and organizations interested in being more inclusive and accessible. Reilly
will discuss how DWOS can help our community identify obstacles encountered by disabled scientists while proposing actionable solutions that labs, organizations and universities can take to increase representation and ensure that disabled scientists continue
to be an integral part of the evolving scientific landscape.

Research Seminar – A Century of Beachgrass Invasions and the Landscape Level Consequences for the US Pacific Northwest Coast
When:
Thursday, June 5 – 3:30pm-4:30pm
Speaker:
Sally Hacker, Professor, Department of Integrative Biology, Oregon State University
Where:
Hatfield Marine Science Center, 2030 SE Marine Science Dr., Newport, OR 97365
Topic: A
century of beachgrass invasions and the landscape level consequences for the US Pacific Northwest coast
Dunes
form on low-lying coastal margins where sand transported by oceanic waves and wind combine with vegetation to produce these highly dynamic backshore structures. Here in the US Pacific Northwest, dunes cover nearly 50% of the coastline and feature the largest
dune sheet in North America. A century ago, two non-native beachgrass species (European beachgrass Ammophila arenaria and American beachgrass Ammophila breviligulata) were intentionally planted on our coastline to stabilize the open, shifting
sand environment. The result was a landscape-level transformation of the coast with consequences for coastal protection, carbon storage, recreation, and native species conservation. In this presentation, Dr. Hacker discusses the past, present, and future of
US Pacific Northwest dunes, highlighting a suite of interdisciplinary field, laboratory, and modeling studies focused on the invasion and its consequences. She will also discuss attempts to restore dunes to their native state and a recently discovered “super
beachgrass” species, formed from the hybridization of the two non-native grass species.

Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU is an app that gives all OSU students, including Ecampus students, 24/7 access by text or phone with a licensed mental health counselor (MySSP stands for “My Student
Support Program”). The app makes it easy to schedule short-term counseling appointments with the same ongoing counselor and provides educational materials covering mental health topics. Students can communicate with a counselor in five different languages
(Mandarin, Cantonese, French, Spanish or English); additional language options are available upon request. Students can download the Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU and learn more about the service
at beav.es/anytimeanywhere. For
questions, please contact Bonnie Hemrick,
Director of Mental Health Promotion.
Togetherall: A new mental health resource for OSU students. Togetherall is a safe and anonymous online community where students can share about what they are feeling and get support to improve
mental health and well-being. Watch this 1-minute video to learn more: https://youtu.be/mEt4dblejNo.
