Participants complete a cutting-edge research project at one of the Department's National Laboratories or DOE Headquarters in support of the Department's mission of minimizing the environmental and climate impacts of fossil fuels and industrial processes while working to achieve net-zero emissions. MLEF participants are mentored by DOE scientists and engineers while completing a research project over the course of the summer. At the end of the program, participants present their research findings at the MLEF Technical Forum. During the 10-week appointment, Fellows receive a weekly stipend, and may be eligible to receive travel and housing assistance. The mission of the MLEF Program is to strengthen a diverse pipeline of future STEM professionals. This program has mentored over 1000 students from across the nation. The crane will be lifting materials needed for new cooling towers onto the roof of the ALS Building. The walkway area between the two buildings will be closed. Both buildings will remain open during the crane activity. The south sidewalk in this section of Campus Way will be closed. The north sidewalk will remain open. The loading zone parking spaces outside of Nash Hall will be closed. Other possible impacts include noise near the work site. This may include: * Conducting industrial facility inspections, assessing pollutant source control best management practices (BMPs), and preparing stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPPs) * Supporting technical evaluation of data, conducting regulatory file reviews, assessing industrial stormwater permit compliance, and assisting clients with BMP or treatment improvements * Performing site development permitting and engineering design tasks related to project / site feasibility, drainage review and reporting, erosion control, and grading * Performing quantity take-offs and cost estimating * Assisting with developing engineering plans and specifications under the guidance of a Professional Engineer * Assisting in the production of discharge monitoring report submittals and technical reports * Preparing written documentation for permit applications * Implementing field activities, such as: o Stormwater, groundwater, soil gas, wastewater, soil, and sediment sample collection o Operation and maintenance of existing stormwater treatment systems * Supporting compliance assessment, management, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes * Preparing scope and cost estimates for environmental consulting support Travel within the Pacific NW region and occasional early morning, evening or weekend work may be required. Qualifications: * B.S. or M.S. in environmental, civil, or chemical engineering with related coursework in hydraulics and hydrology, environmental chemistry, and/or wastewater treatment * 1-4 years of relevant professional experience * Registration as an EIT or PE is required * Strong technical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication skills are required * Knowledge and experience with State and Federal environmental regulations in the Pacific Northwest is preferred Landau Associates offers an excellent compensation and benefits package in an environment that promotes personal growth and professional advancement. Hi all, we have a great line up of speaker’s this quarter for our Spring Water Resources Science series. This series is co-organized with Portland State University and the US Geological Survey Oregon Water Science Center. All talks this quarter will be at 4 PM on Wednesdays in Burt Hall room 193 and on zoom. Please join us! This week's speaker on April 10th is Alan Kasprak, a Research Physical Scientist with the US EPA in Corvallis. Dr. Kasprak is new to Corvallis, he was last at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. He has degrees in Watershed Sciences, Earth Sciences, and Geology and Geophysics. His talk title is "Flow alteration, river valley morphology, and the influence of Glen Canyon Dam on sediment availability along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon." A description is below. Changes in the magnitude, duration, and timing of streamflow affect the entirety of watersheds, from the channel itself to upland landscapes far from the river. In this seminar, I'll detail how hydrologic alteration, driven by the construction and operation of Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River, has led to cascading impacts on upland and riparian landscapes and ecosystems throughout Grand Canyon. A particular focus will be placed on the use of remote sensing techniques, including sonar, lidar, and photogrammetry for monitoring and predicting sediment connectivity and landscape change in a drastically altered hydrologic setting. I'll additionally detail alternative flow regimes and future opportunities for hydrologic restoration that may lead to ecosystem recovery at river corridor scales in one of America's iconic landscapes. Hello BEE community! This is Brooke Donaty, the Student Senator for BEE on Engineering Student Council. My main job in this position is to support students within the BEE department, and one of the ways I do this is by getting feedback from the students currently in the program. Attached to this email is a student satisfaction survey used to determine how the year has gone for you all, how the BEE department has helped students feel supported, and what can be changed about the department to help solve issues students are currently having. It should only take about 15 minutes to fill out, and it would be awesome if you all could provide the department with feedback, as it really helps us improve in supporting students. On Wednesday of Week 10 at 3:00 PM I plan on holding an open forum for all BEE students and faculty to provide a safe space for students to discuss the feedback received on this form and any other issues they are currently having with the department. This forum is being held to help students, and nothing discussed at the forum will be used to retaliate against student complaints to ensure that we are getting all feedback the students have to offer, both good and bad. Food will be provided, and it should last about an hour. ERM is looking for a motivated, detail-oriented, Consulting Associate, Engineer/Geologist to join our growing team in the Portland, Oregon office. Working under the direction of project managers and partners, the successful candidate will work on a wide variety of site investigation, remediation, compliance, and hazardous waste management projects throughout Pacific Northwest. This opportunity includes projects that utilize ERM's technical experts to implement innovative and regulatory driven engineering and remediation technologies, unique subsurface contaminated site investigations, and complex wastewater compliance projects, all while building the required experience to obtain your professional registration. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Conduct field work, including soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, soil vapor, and indoor air sampling, aquifer testing, drilling oversight and soil logging, soil boring and monitoring well installation, well development, purging and sampling, remedial and wastewater treatment pilot tests, and remedial system operation and maintenance. * Assist with remediation system operation and maintenance, construction, and subcontractor management. * Compile, analyze, and evaluate data; assist in report preparation. * Assist with environmental compliance reports, engineering design reports, sampling and investigation work plans, and quality assurance plans. * Develop health and safety plans including job hazard analyses. * Assist in ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. * Work within quality/budget/schedule expectations and scope-specific assignments. * Communicate with subcontractors, regulatory agents, tenants, and clients during field activities. REQUIREMENTS: * Bachelors in geology, hydrogeology, or engineering; Masters a plus. * Knowledge of aquatic chemistry, chemical fate and transport, hydrology, and/or groundwater hydrology a plus. * 0+ years of relevant environmental experience including performing field work (e.g., environmental media sampling, construction oversite, etc.), report writing, and general safety training. * Preferred 2+ years of relevant environmental experience. * Strong work ethic and willingness/interest in field assignments. * Detail-oriented with solutions and results-oriented aptitude and hands-on trouble-shooting/problem-solving skills. * Comfortable with data manipulation and analysis in Excel or similar program. * GIT or EIT certification preferred. * Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health and Safety protocols. * Effective written/verbal communication and organization/analytical skills; experience recording/writing detailed technical data and reports a plus. * Ability to work independently and as part of a team. * Ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility, travel, and work independently with minimal supervision. * Valid driver's license and a good driving record. * Ability to lift at least 40 pounds. * Ability to perform field work standing or walking for full field days. * Local candidates preferred. Hi all, Please join us this week for the joint OSU/PSU/USGS water science seminar Wednesday at 4 PM in Burt 193 at OSU and on Zoom. The speaker is Dalton Hance from the Western Fisheries Research Center, US Geological Survey in Washington. His talk is titled, The Lookout Point Project and Upper Willamette Chinook Salmon: a case study of a wicked problem in resource management Description: Managers of natural resources such as water or fisheries are often faced with making decisions about complex systems that affect multiple stakeholders. Different stakeholders may hold different values, while scientific uncertainty about the effect of different decisions varies. Easy problems in resource management are those where agreement among stakeholders is high and where uncertainty is low. When there is considerable stakeholder conflict and scientific uncertainty is high, natural resource management decision become wicked problems. This talk will focus on the wicked problem of the US Army Corps Willamette Valley Project (WVP) and the ESA-listed Upper Willamette Chinook Salmon. The WVP is water resource management system consisting of 13 dams that were authorized, built and operated for multiple purposes. The primary purpose of the WVP is flood control, but other authorized uses include hydropower, irrigation, recreation, and fish and wildlife. With the advent of a 2021 federal court injunction, management for recovery of ESA-listed fish species has taken priority over all other uses other than flood control. In this talk, I will review the scientific uncertainty and complexity of water resource management for Upper Willamette Chinook Salmon in the Lookout Point Project on the Middle Fork Willamette River. I will highlight what we’ve learned from an acoustic telemetry evaluation of the deep drawdown of Lookout Point Reservoir in 2023. I will discuss how this study, when viewed in context of our understanding of reservoir ecology, shows that even if you just limit yourself to the question of “What’s best for Upper Willamette Chinook Salmon?” the problem is a wicked one. The research lab is located off-campus, so reliable transportation is required. Must be available to work full time this summer. The Tanguay lab conducts state-of-the-art zebrafish high throughput research and is seeking individuals to help perform routine complex technical specialized tasks. The individual will be responsible for supporting the operations and laboratory work. This is an excellent opportunity to be apart of and conduct innovative research and gain hands-on and practical skills. Upon gaining more research experience in the lab, there is room for advancement to obtain more technical skills. The position requires applicants to have education in a science-related field and be hardworking, detail-oriented, self-motivated, adaptable, and multi-task. Individuals must be able to work independently and in a team. Previous experience in a research setting is a plus but not required. Individuals at all stages of their higher-education career are encouraged to apply (even those graduating soon).
