Position Overview: The successful candidate will apply knowledge of holistic land management and scientific and engineering principles to rehabilitate and restore degraded land resources experiencing desertification problems such as dust storms, wildfires, proliferation of invasive species, soil loss and erosion, and flooding. The selected candidate will be an advocate for holistic land management and green infrastructure practices, demonstrating how planned grazing, land planning, ecological monitoring, and other regenerative practices can restore our communities, land, and watersheds. Soil health is the core of the work in both urban and rural contexts. This job requires a self-directed and analytical individual to design and direct holistic land management practices at project sites. The ideal candidate will perform quality control and quality assurance at different project stages. They must also have the flexibility and critical thinking necessary to meet the high standard of care to achieve effective land rehabilitation results and to inform course-correcting decisions to re-plan and adjust management practices as appropriate. Qualifications: Candidates should possess the following qualifications: * A bachelor's degree or higher in the field of engineering is required. * PE or EIT or active pursuit preferred. * Accreditation in land management and/or permaculture design. Additional Desired Qualifications * Soil health training and/or experience. * Envision Sustainability Professional and/or Certified Floodplain Management accreditation. * QGIS and CAD proficiency Core Responsibilities: This position is anticipated to be about 80% engineering work and 20% field work to implement determined designs, plans, and other holistic land management methods. Core duties and responsibilities may include: Performing design work for: * Land planning (sizing paddocks, designing water infrastructure, power considerations, etc.). * Grazing plans. * Hydraulic structures. * Systems for scour countermeasures and streambank erosion protection. * Green infrastructure. Implementing and overseeing implementation of designs and plans of holistic land management and green infrastructure methods being developed on demonstration site(s), including managing trials and QA/QC of lab work. * Managing the demonstration site(s) to provide visitors/clients with an optimal experience, managing transactions of agricultural products, etc. * Developing, calibrating, and validating hydrologic and hydraulic numerical models. * Using CAD and GIS tools to pre- and post-process data. * Organizing, manipulating, and evaluating data using spreadsheets or other engineering software. * Delineating floodplains and creating flood hazard maps. * Assisting with ecological monitoring and collecting data such as rain and stream gage, water quality, groundwater elevation readings, and infiltration testing. * Assisting with financial planning. * Providing in-field services to support the implementation of holistic land management and green infrastructure designs and plans, which may include, but are not limited to, the installation of permanent fencing systems, assembling and moving mobile fencing systems, constructing animal handling facilities, installing and maintaining watering points for livestock, using tools of the trade to complete certain tasks, operating farm equipment, installation and monitoring of certain gauges or meters to inform planned grazing decisions, site reconnaissance to inspect project conditions, construction observation, and vegetation maintenance. * Preparing technical reports, memoranda, and manuals. * Working closely with internal project teams, clients, and other stakeholders on specific assignments or for other meetings. * Expanding engineering and land management skills, both technical and non-technical, from continuous learning. * Other duties as assigned. Skill Requirements: * Ability to work independently, manage time, and work in a team. * Ability to work on multiple assignments simultaneously, with strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills. * Interest in working with animals or agricultural practices. * Practical decision-making, adaptability, trainability, and investment in regenerative agriculture. * Physical capacity to perform functions of lifting/pushing/pulling/moving of heavy objects, agility and responsiveness to make quick, precise adjustments to environment or machinery controls, and stamina to be physically active for long periods of time in working conditions described below. We investigated temperature dynamics in the Yaquina Bay estuary, which experiences large seasonal variations in river, coastal ocean, and surface heat flux conditions. We collected more than two years of observations at nine sites throughout the estuary and found seasonal changes in temperature variability linked to river discharge, river and ocean temperature, and surface heat flux. We found that neap tides are associated with estuary warming in the spring and summer. Sloughs exhibit unique dynamics influenced by their morphology, including stronger diurnal heating and cooling in areas with extensive mudflats. To further explore present and future temperature in Yaquina Bay, we developed a 3D hydrodynamic model of the estuary using the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM). We used the model to test the importance of surface heat flux and found that it plays a critical role in warming the estuary during the summer, but a minor role in winter when estuarine residence time is short and control by ocean and river temperatures is more dominant. Future changes in atmospheric, oceanic, and riverine conditions associated with climate change could alter estuarine temperature, affecting habitat suitability for species of economic, ecological, and cultural importance such as oysters, eelgrass, and salmon. Ranging from microscopic organisms to copepods, larval invertebrates and fishes, and gelatinous organisms, much of this planktonic life forms the base of the marine food web which supports larger and larger organisms up to marine mammals and even humans. Recent work with the In Situ Ichthyoplankton Imaging System (ISIIS), and its associated automated image processing pipeline, is presented as an example of where progress has been made with imaging systems. Examples are given of the application of ISIIS from projects conducted within the California Current Ecosystem ranging from detailed perspectives of thin layer dynamics in Monterey Bay, California, to riverine influence on cross shelf plankton community distributions to utilizing near-real time analyses to drive adaptive sampling within hypoxic areas off the Oregon coast. Causes of change and consequences for diversity on rocky shores Long-term, large-scale experimental studies provide critical information about how global change influences communities. When environmental changes are severe, they can trigger abrupt transitions from one community type to another leading to a regime shift. From 2014 to 2016, rocky intertidal habitats in the northeast Pacific Ocean experienced extreme temperatures during a multi-year marine heatwave (MHW) and sharp population declines of the keystone predator Pisaster ochraceus due to sea star wasting disease (SSWD). We measured the community structure before, during and after the MHW onset and SSWD outbreak in a 19-year succession and species interaction experiment conducted in a rocky intertidal meta-ecosystem spanning 13 sites on four capes in Oregon and northern California, United States. Kelp abundance declined during the MHW due to extreme temperatures, while gooseneck barnacle and mussel abundances increased due to reduced predation pressure after the loss of Pisaster from SSWD. Using several methods, we detected regime shifts from substrate- or algae-dominated to invertebrate-dominated alternative states at two capes. After water temperatures cooled and Pisaster population densities recovered, community structure differed from pre-disturbance conditions, suggesting low resilience. Consequently, thermal stress and predator loss can result in regime shifts that fundamentally alter community structure even after restoration of baseline conditions. Anchor QEA is seeking interns across a broad range of practice areas for our 2025 Internship Program. We will require interns to regularly come into an office and potentially perform field and/or laboratory work, depending on project needs. Interns will experience a combination of hands-on work that includes a defined project within their scope of study, as well as the opportunity for exposure to other service areas within our firm. Work will include office-based duties (e.g., computer) as may also involve field and/or laboratory work. Deliver a defined capstone project that will be developed based on assigned work with assistance from senior engineers, scientists, planners, and other professionals. The Corvallis weather forecast for Thursday morning (05:00 - 10:00 am) is for below freezing temperatures, a skiff of snow, followed by rain, which will freeze to form a glaze of ice on ground/road/sidewalk surfaces. Ice thickness projections range from 0.01 to 0.1 inch. It is anticipated that temperatures will warm during the day, but there is still a large amount of uncertainty as to when. I wanted to let you know that we are accepting applications for the 2025 summer internship program with the NRCS through February 9th. This is an internship we host every year in partnership with the NRCS, and has been a wonderful opportunity for students to gain experience with that agency. As an intern, you will work directly with ESA's multi-disciplinary technical teams, with opportunities to conduct field assignments, participate in public outreach efforts, learn about environmental protection regulations and policies, analyze data, contribute to research, and so much more-based on your field of study and interests. Interns work in-person at our offices in California, Oregon, Washington, and Florida, with some hybrid flexibility. As the effects of climate change continue to alter natural ecosystems, existing relationships between fish reproductive development, output and success may change due to the direct and indirect effects of environmental stressors on reproductive biology. Field-based methods can provide valuable information about the past and current status of fish populations, yet lack the control to define mechanistic links between environmental stressors, parental condition and reproduction, especially in harsh, remote environments. To fill this knowledge gap, we performed a 6-month experiment in the lab where we exposed adult Arctic cod to either control or OA conditions from the onset of reproductive development in early October through larval hatching at the end of March. We assessed adult energetic status post-spawning, female and male gamete quality, 24-hr post fertilization developmental success and condition, larval hatching success, hatch timing, and larval sizes and energy stores at hatch. Overall, we found that prolonged exposure to OA led to unique responses that differed between male and female fish, as well as across multiple life stages from adults to gametes to hatched larvae. This comprehensive experiment also produced useful data that allowed us to investigate other biological influences on Arctic cod reproduction (e.g., higher female energetic status leads to better embryo development!). In this seminar we will first discuss the effects of OA on Arctic cod reproduction and larval development, and then explore some of the additional biological influences on Arctic cod reproductive biology. In this seminar, I will introduce the biology of Hydractinia and highlight its significance as a model system for studying regeneration. We are interested in a candidate that has the capacity to grow, is a quick learner, is detail-orientated, enjoys working independently and with a team, and possesses strong written and verbal communication skills. A successful candidate will have a degree in geological science, chemistry, environmental science, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, or related program as well as a strong interest in environmental geochemistry and the operation of a stellar environmental geochemistry laboratory. A successful candidate will have opportunities to work on a variety of tasks of differing complexities, both independently and in team environments, learning directly from leaders in the industry. Responsibilities * Perform environmental geochemical laboratory work, including data analysis and reporting, to support remedial investigations, feasibility studies, remedy implementation, and research and development initiatives * Maintain laboratory equipment and chemical, sample, and waste inventories * Develop and implement quality assurance/quality control practices and standard operating procedures * Some fieldwork may be required (e.g., to support passive sampling or other sophisticated data collection) What Are We Looking For? As the effects of climate change continue to alter natural ecosystems, existing relationships between fish reproductive development, output and success may change due to the direct and indirect effects of environmental stressors on reproductive biology. Field-based methods can provide valuable information about the past and current status of fish populations, yet lack the control to define mechanistic links between environmental stressors, parental condition and reproduction, especially in harsh, remote environments. To fill this knowledge gap, we performed a 6-month experiment in the lab where we exposed adult Arctic cod to either control or OA conditions from the onset of reproductive development in early October through larval hatching at the end of March. We assessed adult energetic status post-spawning, female and male gamete quality, 24-hr post fertilization developmental success and condition, larval hatching success, hatch timing, and larval sizes and energy stores at hatch. Overall, we found that prolonged exposure to OA led to unique responses that differed between male and female fish, as well as across multiple life stages from adults to gametes to hatched larvae. This comprehensive experiment also produced useful data that allowed us to investigate other biological influences on Arctic cod reproduction (e.g., higher female energetic status leads to better embryo development!). In this seminar we will first discuss the effects of OA on Arctic cod reproduction and larval development, and then explore some of the additional biological influences on Arctic cod reproductive biology. I will also discuss the application of single-cell RNA-sequencing to this species, detailing key insights gleaned from this rich dataset and their implications for understanding stem cell biology and regenerative mechanisms. Methods for estimating the number of animals in a population (abundance) commonly require obtaining a count of the individuals detected during a survey and an estimate of what proportion of the population this count represents. For the latter, additional information needs to be gathered during the survey. Distance sampling (DS), for example, is a commonly used method for estimating cetacean abundance during ship-based line transect surveys where this additional information consists of the perpendicular distances between the line and the detected cetacean schools. This method relies on that all animals directly on the line were detected. Using two observation platforms in a mark-recapture distance sampling survey can alleviate this potential issue. However, setting up a second observation platform in a meaningful way poses new challenges. In this talk, I will present case studies which used new technology for improving abundance estimation, two marine studies which employed acoustic recorders or drones during cetacean surveys and one terrestrial study which employed newly developed acoustic recorders for monitoring gibbons using spatial capture-recapture. These studies highlight the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to population monitoring. HMSC Research Seminar - Arctic Cod Reproduction Under Prolonged Exposure to Oceon Acidification<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fevents.or…> When: Thursday, February 6 - 3:30pm-4:30pm Speaker: Emily Slesinger, Alaska Fisheries Science Center, National Marine Fisheries Services, NOAA Where: Hatfield Marine Science Center, 2030 SE Marine Science Dr., Newport, OR 97365 Topic: Arctic cod reproduction under prolonged exposure to ocean acidification High latitude ecosystems are vulnerable to ocean acidification (OA), potentially affecting important fish species including Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida), a key forage fish species in the Arctic Ocean important for birds, marine mammals and other commercial and subsistence fished species. As the effects of climate change continue to alter natural ecosystems, existing relationships between fish reproductive development, output and success may change due to the direct and indirect effects of environmental stressors on reproductive biology. Field-based methods can provide valuable information about the past and current status of fish populations, yet lack the control to define mechanistic links between environmental stressors, parental condition and reproduction, especially in harsh, remote environments. To fill this knowledge gap, we performed a 6-month experiment in the lab where we exposed adult Arctic cod to either control or OA conditions from the onset of reproductive development in early October through larval hatching at the end of March. We assessed adult energetic status post-spawning, female and male gamete quality, 24-hr post fertilization developmental success and condition, larval hatching success, hatch timing, and larval sizes and energy stores at hatch. Overall, we found that prolonged exposure to OA led to unique responses that differed between male and female fish, as well as across multiple life stages from adults to gametes to hatched larvae. This comprehensive experiment also produced useful data that allowed us to investigate other biological influences on Arctic cod reproduction (e.g., higher female energetic status leads to better embryo development!). In this seminar we will first discuss the effects of OA on Arctic cod reproduction and larval development, and then explore some of the additional biological influences on Arctic cod reproductive biology. Among the most fascinating organisms with regenerative capabilities is Hydractinia, a marine colonial hydrozoan that has been a subject of study since the 1880s, beginning with the pioneering work of August Weismann. This extraordinary organism possesses the ability to regenerate throughout its life, a feat made possible by its population of stem cells capable of differentiating into all other cell types. With modern genetic tools, we can now delve into the cellular and molecular mechanisms underpinning Hydractinia's regenerative prowess. Single-cell RNA-sequencing has proven invaluable in this effort, providing unprecedented resolution into the diverse cellular populations and their gene expression dynamics. In this seminar, I will introduce the biology of Hydractinia and highlight its significance as a model system for studying regeneration. I will also discuss the application of single-cell RNA-sequencing to this species, detailing key insights gleaned from this rich dataset and their implications for understanding stem cell biology and regenerative mechanisms.
