Last year, the Oregon Food Bank Network saw 1.9 million visits to food assistance sites - a 14% increase from the previous year. Food insecurity disproportionately affects specific communities in Oregon, regardless of geography. Today, 1 in 8 people face hunger in rural, urban, and suburban communities throughout the state. Columbia Riverkeeper seeks two responsible individuals to serve as Water Quality Technician Interns from May to September. Please Note: these internships are location specific. There is one opening in Hood River and one opening in Portland. Technicians will become experts in E.coli and harmful algal bloom monitoring techniques and sampling methods. Prior experience with E.coli or algal bloom monitoring is not required. Attention to detail and the ability to work independently are a must. How do we craft important policy statements for advancing knowledge and support of our innovations? You are specially invited to join this spring's "Marine Policy in the United States," PPOL448 (CRN 54009) and PPOL548 (CRN 54010). The course is 4 credits. Anyone interested should sign up as soon as possible. We have a nice interdisciplinary group of 24 currently, a size which promotes deep learning and significantly enhances meaningful discussion and the formation of a supportive, active learning community. Description: This course introduces students to the history, rationale, achievements, and gaps in American ocean policy. Students will learn the full policy cycle, acquire foundational tools of policy analysis and problem solving, and will synthesize and apply their knowledge creatively to proposals for integrated policy solutions to specific contemporary marine issues. There is no final examination, no required text book, and no prerequisites. We work hard, improve our research, analysis and writing skills, and often form lasting friendships in this course. Greetings students, I know you are all quite busy with the end of the term, but we have some pretty fantastic awards we are trying to get for some of the faculty in BEE. Oregon State University runs a few annual awards and we have two that we think are quite amazing in BEE! We are nominating Khrystal for the OSU Academic Advising Award and already have a team of seniors working on the letter for this one. Thank you for all your hard work on that!! Hi everyone, I need someone to help me with grading assignments and some class logistics for spring term. This is only open to seniors and AMP students and is not available to students enrolled in River Engineering. The work load is around 5 hours a week. There are 35 students in the class and each assignment has a detailed grading rubric. It could involve an optional field trip if you choose to join. The Sea Grant Community Engaged Internship (CEI) for Undergraduate Students aims to broaden participation in coastal, ocean, and marine sciences by providing training and mentorship to early-stage university and community college students. Hiring summer field and lab tech

Hi everyone, My team is looking to hire a student for field and lab work on two related projects emphasizing water quality and algae/rooted aquatic plant growth. This student will conduct field work and lab work alongside other researchers on two related projects from May to August of 2025. You will be trained for all work activities and will be required to participate (free of charge) in first aid/CPR and field safety training. Project 1: We will explore how wildfire severity influences the rate of change, duration, and magnitude of dissolved oxygen changes in rivers that receive wildfire ash input. Most of this work will take place in a laboratory setting with occasional low-intensity field work involved to collect soil and water samples. Work will include operating a drying oven and muffle furnace and requires attention to detail in recording and handling samples and data. The project is expected to run from June to August and will require less than 10 hours a week. Project 2: We are embarking on our third year of a study evaluating the drivers of algae and rooted aquatic plant growth on the Klamath River following dam removal. This will take place from May to August and will include three-day field campaigns to northern California every two weeks. This work will involve light kayaking, wading, snorkeling, algae/plant identification, and overnight camping at campgrounds. Conditions will be HOT, at times buggy, and physically challenging, and we work long hours. But it is also the most fun I've ever had doing field work. This year the need is greater than ever and, with your help, we can fight hunger! The rising cost of food and housing has increased food insecurity in Oregon, Southwest Washington and across the country. Last year, the Oregon Food Bank Network saw 1.9 million visits to food assistance sites - a 14% increase from the previous year. Food insecurity disproportionately affects specific communities in Oregon, regardless of geography. Today, 1 in 8 people face hunger in rural, urban, and suburban communities throughout the state. Specifically, we review governance frameworks, ecosystem policy, fishery ecosystem plans, catch accounting systems, trawl bycatch controls, trawl area closures and habitat protections, gear modifications, a Crab Rationalization Program, Ecosystem and Economic Status Reports, and Ecosystem and Socioeconomic Profiles. The strongest EBFM features of this management system include mechanisms to avoid overfishing, use of scientific knowledge, consideration of ecosystem connections, appropriate monitoring, acknowledging uncertainty, stakeholder involvement, and decisions that reflect societal choice. Some EBFM principles, such as the efficacy of gear and area closures and accounting for the dynamic nature of ecosystems have room for improvement. In spite of the large number of EBFM measures in place, three of the eight BSAI crab stocks with biomass estimates were below their minimum stock size thresholds, and thus classified as “overfished” in 2023. The lack of apparent correspondence between implemented EBFM actions and crab stock trends may indicate that environmentally driven sporadic recruitment, spikes in natural mortality, and stock range shifts mute favorable responses to EBFM actions or that outstanding critical EBFM measures have yet to be addressed. In the face of recent large-scale changes in the marine ecosystems of the BSAI and an outlook for greater changes in the future, it is increasingly important to routinely reevaluate interactions between crab, their ecosystems, fisheries and fishing communities. 2025 Food Drive to Benefit Linn and Benton County

Greetings students, staff and faculty, This year's food drive is a month later so we have started the planning process! A huge thank you to the Ecological Engineering Student Society, who have already had an event to help support these efforts. Every year OSU is one of many in the state of Oregon who participate in the Oregon Governors Food Drive. Donations from OSU alone provide 20% of the budget to the local Linn Benton Food Share. With the changes in the economy, they need our help now more than ever. BEE has many events lined up for the month and we hope you can help and participate. We are looking for quite a few donations of items including: Peanut Butter Jelly/Jam Art pieces to raffle Flea market items - this could be anything that you think can sell on campus. I have tons of stuff I've been selling the past few flea markets to help build these funds but my stock is starting to get low. WIP sale - this is a work in progress sale. Bring all those art projects you started but never finished. Bring any art supplies you have lying around. Cheese for grilled cheese Tomato soup Kielbasa/Brats/onions/buns (we are doing these for St. Patty's day) Tea Hot chocolate Anything else you can contribute to this event! This is particularly evident in the study of plankton, or organisms that live in the sea and drift with currents. Ranging from microscopic organisms to copepods, larval invertebrates and fishes, and gelatinous organisms, much of this planktonic life forms the base of the marine food web which supports larger and larger organisms up to marine mammals and even humans. Recent work with the In Situ Ichthyoplankton Imaging System (ISIIS), and its associated automated image processing pipeline, is presented as an example of where progress has been made with imaging systems. Examples are given of the application of ISIIS from projects conducted within the California Current Ecosystem ranging from detailed perspectives of thin layer dynamics in Monterey Bay, California, to riverine influence on cross shelf plankton community distributions to utilizing near-real time analyses to drive adaptive sampling within hypoxic areas off the Oregon coast. Causes of change and consequences for diversity on rocky shores Long-term, large-scale experimental studies provide critical information about how global change influences communities. When environmental changes are severe, they can trigger abrupt transitions from one community type to another leading to a regime shift. From 2014 to 2016, rocky intertidal habitats in the northeast Pacific Ocean experienced extreme temperatures during a multi-year marine heatwave (MHW) and sharp population declines of the keystone predator Pisaster ochraceus due to sea star wasting disease (SSWD). We measured the community structure before, during and after the MHW onset and SSWD outbreak in a 19-year succession and species interaction experiment conducted in a rocky intertidal meta-ecosystem spanning 13 sites on four capes in Oregon and northern California, United States. Kelp abundance declined during the MHW due to extreme temperatures, while gooseneck barnacle and mussel abundances increased due to reduced predation pressure after the loss of Pisaster from SSWD. Using several methods, we detected regime shifts from substrate- or algae-dominated to invertebrate-dominated alternative states at two capes. After water temperatures cooled and Pisaster population densities recovered, community structure differed from pre-disturbance conditions, suggesting low resilience. Consequently, thermal stress and predator loss can result in regime shifts that fundamentally alter community structure even after restoration of baseline conditions. Despite changes in community structure, species diversity has recovered at most study sites. This effort is in conjunction with the Governor's State Employees Food Drive. The resources raised by OSU efforts in Corvallis benefit nonprofit agencies served by Linn-Benton Food Share(Link is external) (Link opens in new window)<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcommunity…>, while proceeds from County Extension Offices, Experiment Stations, OSU-Cascades and centers associated with OSU go to their local food banks. During the Food Drive, participating OSU departments, extension offices and student groups across campus compete to be the top fundraiser. Competing units are categorized by the number of employees in each department. At the end of the Food Drive, the top three fundraising units in each category are recognized. Last year, 2025, OSU contributed 467,777 meals to the Linn Benton Food Share and local food banks!
