The Plant Engineering organization provides engineering oversight, program support, and qualified staff to support the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) mission. Near term support is provided by the Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC). The mission includes safely storing, treating, and immobilizing the highly hazardous radiological wastes created during prior periods of nuclear processing at the Hanford Reservation. The Plant Engineering organization and programs provide the framework for executing engineering work. Plant Engineering personnel are responsible for the technical adequacy of Plant Engineering products and decisions. Rotational Engineers will be in a two-year program in which they will rotate through various groups within Plant Engineering, completing assignments, and gaining experience. Assignments will include resolution of technical challenges, completing engineering work products, review of other's completed work products, and working in a team mindset to help accomplish the goals of Plant Engineering and WTCC. Rotational assignments may include System Engineer, Procurement Engineer, Project Engineer, Flowsheet Engineer, and Design Engineer positions, depending on individual skills, desires, and group needs. It is expected that rotational engineers will challenge themselves and grow their professional capabilities as they begin their engineering careers, becoming ever more valuable members of the Engineering team. Upon completion of this program, these engineers will be eligible for advancement and are expected to be placed into open positions within Plant Engineering or may apply to other positions within the WTP project. This position shall be performed under the day-to-day direction, control, and supervision of WTCC. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES/TASKS * Implement Plant Engineering program elements as assigned * Develop, review, concur with and/or assess engineering technical documents * Develop, review, concur with and/or assess management control procedures, technical procedures, or guides * Assess facilities, systems, and/or processes anomalies or degraded conditions * Resolve condition report issues or other similar discrepancies as assigned * Develop or request support to develop engineering products for system or equipment repair or replacement * Provide on-site technical support during preventative or corrective maintenance activities or commissioning * Assist assigned engineers in determining operability and correcting out-of-specification conditions * Ensure the health and safety of self and staff by implementing the principles of Integrated Safety Management System * Ensure that personal conduct of work is consistent with nuclear safety and quality culture expectations * Meet training requirements and maintain qualifications to perform work * Support control of field work in assigned areas, including integration of project activities, repairs, and equipment operations activities * Support operations, maintenance, and commissioning of the WTP Facilities * Remain apprised of operational status and ongoing modification activities * Provide technical review of facility/system related procedures and work instructions * Assist with resolution of design issues necessary to support plant operations and/or maintenance * Review Project design and other documents for operations, maintenance, and testing impacts and providing alternative solutions * Interface with subcontractors, vendors, and project support groups * Ensures timely and accurate oral and written technical reports on assigned activities * Complete required training and maintain qualifications associated with assignments * Support the Waste Treatment Plant Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work to protect self, others, and the environment This job description is not intended to include every duty, task, or instruction for which an employee is responsible. An update on the latest monitoring data and a new eruption forecast for this submarine volcano offshore Oregon. Axial Seamount is an active submarine volcano located ~300 miles offshore Oregon that has erupted 3 times in the last 30 years, making it the most active volcano in the Pacific Northwest. It is monitored in real-time by seafloor instruments connected to a cabled observatory. Since the most recent eruption in 2015, the rate of re-inflation and magma supply was initially high, but it gradually slowed and by the summer of 2023 it had nearly stopped, suggesting maybe the volcano was going to sleep. However, in the last year, the rate of inflation and the number of earthquakes has dramatically increased, suggesting that Axial has now re-awakened and is building to its next eruption. This talk will describe the most recent monitoring data and its implications for forecasting the next eruption. Wakefield Professor of Ocean Fishery Sciences, College of the Environment, University of Washington Where: 2030 SE Marine Science Dr, Newport, OR 97365 Three decades ago, the Exxon Valdez ran aground killing hundreds of thousands of Common Murres, creating one of the largest environment disasters the Northeast Pacific had experienced. Thirty years later, murres and their Alcid relatives are threatened with starvation and reproductive failure brought on by broad-scale ocean warming. Alaskan murre populations have already lost millions of birds. Analysis of beached bird data spanning 30 years of monitoring suggest that predictable seasonal patterns in beached bird abundance are severely disrupted following major marine heatwave events. Event magnitude, duration and spatial extent are all positively associated with increased temperatures. When considered at the scale of a large marine ecosystem, the seabird community sustains multiple losses, with effects lasting at least three years. This talk will explore causality of the association between warmer waters and seabird mortality, and implications of these changes, while simultaneously uncovering who collects these data and how that might ultimately make a positive difference to Pacific Northwest coastal ecosystems. An update on the latest monitoring data and a new eruption forecast for this submarine volcano offshore Oregon. Axial Seamount is an active submarine volcano located ~300 miles offshore Oregon that has erupted 3 times in the last 30 years, making it the most active volcano in the Pacific Northwest. It is monitored in real-time by seafloor instruments connected to a cabled observatory. Since the most recent eruption in 2015, the rate of re-inflation and magma supply was initially high, but it gradually slowed and by the summer of 2023 it had nearly stopped, suggesting maybe the volcano was going to sleep. However, in the last year, the rate of inflation and the number of earthquakes has dramatically increased, suggesting that Axial has now re-awakened and is building to its next eruption. This talk will describe the most recent monitoring data and its implications for forecasting the next eruption. These effects are expected to intensify without substantial mitigation efforts. In tropical regions, rising ocean temperatures may push marine species, such as coastal cetaceans, to their thermal limits, leading to species redistributions and cascading effects on community and ecosystem dynamics. In this talk, I will share the results of the most comprehensive datasets of occurrences for Guiana dolphins from systematic boat-based surveys conducted between 1987 and 2023, across seven countries. Guiana dolphins face unprecedented challenges from ongoing multiple and cumulative human activities, which are likely to be exacerbated by climate change over the next four decades. We built ensemble Species Distribution Models (SDM) to predict future distributions under the latest CMIP6 projected scenarios: optimistic (SSP1-2.6), intermediate (SSP2-4.5), and pessimistic (SSP5-8.5). Expert knowledge was used to validate model predictions. We ask here i) how different climate change scenarios will affect Guiana dolphin distribution? and ii) how the current Marine Protected Area (MPA) network may protect dolphins in the present and future? Our study contributes to ongoing efforts to understand the potential effects of projected climate change scenarios on coastal tropical marine predators. Wakefield Professor of Ocean Fishery Sciences, College of the Environment, University of Washington Where: 2030 SE Marine Science Dr, Newport, OR 97365 Three decades ago, the Exxon Valdez ran aground killing hundreds of thousands of Common Murres, creating one of the largest environment disasters the Northeast Pacific had experienced. Thirty years later, murres and their Alcid relatives are threatened with starvation and reproductive failure brought on by broad-scale ocean warming. Alaskan murre populations have already lost millions of birds. Analysis of beached bird data spanning 30 years of monitoring suggest that predictable seasonal patterns in beached bird abundance are severely disrupted following major marine heatwave events. Event magnitude, duration and spatial extent are all positively associated with increased temperatures. When considered at the scale of a large marine ecosystem, the seabird community sustains multiple losses, with effects lasting at least three years. This talk will explore causality of the association between warmer waters and seabird mortality, and implications of these changes, while simultaneously uncovering who collects these data and how that might ultimately make a positive difference to Pacific Northwest coastal ecosystems. Good morning, This is your annual email as we have seen a large increase this year of scooters and bikes in Gilmore Hall and other spaces around campus. I wanted to send a quick reminder that bikes, scooters and skateboards are not allowed in classrooms, conference rooms, students lounges, or other public spaces. For your reference: Bicycle Policies The bicycle policies are defined by Oregon State University Bicycle Regulations<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpolicy.or…>. Campus regulations dictate that bicyclists shall comply with city ordinances regarding bicycle use<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.corva…>, and that "students, staff, or faculty should be registered with the Department of Public Safety<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublicsaf…>." - paragraph 5.10.1, standard 07-025. "Bicycles may be parked, stored, or left only in areas so designated by bicycle racks, signage, or storage." - paragraph 5.10.6, standard 07-025. "Bicycles parked at bicycle racks at or near academic or research buildings longer than five (5) days will be considered abandoned and may be impounded." - paragraph 5.10.7, standard 07-025. "Bicycles users may be cited for: (e) Being parked in buildings except in designated bicycle rooms." - paragraph 5.10.8, standard 07-025. Gilmore Hall has parking for bikes/scooters/skateboards in several spots around the building. During summer 2021, an unprecedented number of ship- and underwater glider-based measurements of dissolved oxygen were made in this region. Near-bottom hypoxia, that is dissolved oxygen less than 61 µmol/kg and harmful to marine animals, was observed over nearly half of the continental shelf inshore of the 200-m isobath, covering 15,500 square kilometers. A mid-shelf ribbon with near-bottom, dissolved oxygen less than 50 µmol/kg extended for 450 km off north-central Oregon and Washington. Spatial patterns in near-bottom oxygen are related to the continental shelf width and other features of the region. Maps of near-bottom oxygen since 1950 show a consistent trend toward lower oxygen levels over time. The fraction of near-bottom water inshore of the 200-m isobath that is hypoxic on average during the summer upwelling season increases over time from nearly absent (2%) in 1950-1980, to 24% in 2009-2018, compared with 56% during the anomalously strong upwelling conditions in 2021. Widespread and increasing near-bottom hypoxia is consistent with increased upwelling-favorable wind forcing under climate change. These effects are expected to intensify without substantial mitigation efforts. In tropical regions, rising ocean temperatures may push marine species, such as coastal cetaceans, to their thermal limits, leading to species redistributions and cascading effects on community and ecosystem dynamics. In this talk, I will share the results of the most comprehensive datasets of occurrences for Guiana dolphins from systematic boat-based surveys conducted between 1987 and 2023, across seven countries. Guiana dolphins face unprecedented challenges from ongoing multiple and cumulative human activities, which are likely to be exacerbated by climate change over the next four decades. We built ensemble Species Distribution Models (SDM) to predict future distributions under the latest CMIP6 projected scenarios: optimistic (SSP1-2.6), intermediate (SSP2-4.5), and pessimistic (SSP5-8.5). Expert knowledge was used to validate model predictions. We ask here i) how different climate change scenarios will affect Guiana dolphin distribution? and ii) how the current Marine Protected Area (MPA) network may protect dolphins in the present and future? Our study contributes to ongoing efforts to understand the potential effects of projected climate change scenarios on coastal tropical marine predators.
