Here in the US Pacific Northwest, dunes cover nearly 50% of the coastline and feature the largest dune sheet in North America. A century ago, two non-native beachgrass species (European beachgrass Ammophila arenaria and American beachgrass Ammophila breviligulata) were intentionally planted on our coastline to stabilize the open, shifting sand environment. The result was a landscape-level transformation of the coast with consequences for coastal protection, carbon storage, recreation, and native species conservation. In this presentation, Dr. Hacker discusses the past, present, and future of US Pacific Northwest dunes, highlighting a suite of interdisciplinary field, laboratory, and modeling studies focused on the invasion and its consequences. She will also discuss attempts to restore dunes to their native state and a recently discovered "super beachgrass" species, formed from the hybridization of the two non-native grass species. The 2025 Sustainable Stormwater Symposium hosted by the Oregon Section of ASCE-EWRG presents the second annual Student Poster Showcase. The Symposium will be held at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) on September 16th-17th of 2025 in Portland, OR. The purpose of the Symposium is to provide an elevated understanding of current sustainable stormwater planning, design, and implementation approaches. The poster showcase will be featured at the happy hour at OMSI on the first afternoon of the symposium. This disparity is largely due to inaccessibility, inadequate accommodations, and a prevalent culture of ableism in STEM. While recent efforts to foster inclusivity in the scientific community have made progress in some arenas, disabled marine scientists continue to be excluded from vital conversations and initiatives aimed at increasing representation. To truly change our field, it is crucial to identify and address the unique challenges faced by disabled scientists. In order to catalyze this change, OSU graduate student Reilly Boyt, founded Disabilities Within Ocean Sciences (DWOS), a non-profit organization aimed at providing a network and resources for disabled marine scientists and organizations interested in being more inclusive and accessible. Here in the US Pacific Northwest, dunes cover nearly 50% of the coastline and feature the largest dune sheet in North America. A century ago, two non-native beachgrass species (European beachgrass Ammophila arenaria and American beachgrass Ammophila breviligulata) were intentionally planted on our coastline to stabilize the open, shifting sand environment. The result was a landscape-level transformation of the coast with consequences for coastal protection, carbon storage, recreation, and native species conservation. In this presentation, Dr. Hacker discusses the past, present, and future of US Pacific Northwest dunes, highlighting a suite of interdisciplinary field, laboratory, and modeling studies focused on the invasion and its consequences. First, we focus on links between the rapidly warming East Australian Current and the prevalence of Kudoa sp. infection in broadbill swordfish, leading to myoliquefaction ('jellymeat') of the flesh. By combining molecular techniques, microscopy, and dynamic spatiotemporal modeling, we developed predictions, forecasts and climate projections of high-risk areas within the fishery, to help minimize wastage and improve sustainability of the industry. Second, we focus on red abalone, by defining and mapping climate refugia within the California Current. By integrating measures of physiological stress in response to environmental conditions with output from dynamically downscaled climate models, we will identify potential refugia that are most conducive to facilitating the persistence of abalone under changing ocean conditions. This disparity is largely due to inaccessibility, inadequate accommodations, and a prevalent culture of ableism in STEM. While recent efforts to foster inclusivity in the scientific community have made progress in some arenas, disabled marine scientists continue to be excluded from vital conversations and initiatives aimed at increasing representation. To truly change our field, it is crucial to identify and address the unique challenges faced by disabled scientists. In order to catalyze this change, OSU graduate student Reilly Boyt, founded Disabilities Within Ocean Sciences (DWOS), a non-profit organization aimed at providing a network and resources for disabled marine scientists and organizations interested in being more inclusive and accessible. Here in the US Pacific Northwest, dunes cover nearly 50% of the coastline and feature the largest dune sheet in North America. A century ago, two non-native beachgrass species (European beachgrass Ammophila arenaria and American beachgrass Ammophila breviligulata) were intentionally planted on our coastline to stabilize the open, shifting sand environment. The result was a landscape-level transformation of the coast with consequences for coastal protection, carbon storage, recreation, and native species conservation. In this presentation, Dr. Hacker discusses the past, present, and future of US Pacific Northwest dunes, highlighting a suite of interdisciplinary field, laboratory, and modeling studies focused on the invasion and its consequences. She will also discuss attempts to restore dunes to their native state and a recently discovered "super beachgrass" species, formed from the hybridization of the two non-native grass species. Interns will run tests, compile results, analyze data, and gain broad exposure to wastewater treatment processes. Nahlik is a wetland ecologist at the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (U.S. EPA) Office of Research and Development in Corvallis. She has advanced the understanding how anthropogenic disturbances, including climate change, affect wetland biogeochemistry across regional and national scales. She is the Technical Science Lead of the U.S. EPA's National Aquatic Resource Surveys (NARS) program, under which annual, field-based condition assessments of U.S. aquatic resources are conducted in lakes, rivers and streams, coasts and estuaries, and wetlands. Amanda has a Ph.D. (2009) and an M.S. (2005) from Dr. William J. Mitsch's wetland laboratory at The Ohio State University, and a B.A. (2002) from Kenyon College. Over her career, Dr. Nahlik has published extensively on different aspects of wetland and aquatic ecology - including water quality improvement, carbon storage, greenhouse gas emissions, ecosystem services, and development of indicators and metrics of wetland ecosystem condition. BEE Food Drive Results

Greetings team, A huge thank you to everyone who participate in this year's Oregon Governor's Food Drive events. We had more donations from local businesses than ever before thanks to the front office staff. New Morning Bakery, Chipotle, Book Bin, Shonnard's, Papa's Pizza and staff/faculty/students of BEE all contributed items to help make these events successful. This year, with your help, BEE was able to raise enough money to buy 10,521 meals for our local community, a record for us, and take 2nd place for our team size- which is pretty darn epic considering we had about half the time to do it in with finals and Spring Break! It comes at a time when the Linn Benton Food Bank needs it to the most as there were stop orders on most of the food they were supposed to receive during the month of April. We are always trying to beat the 6th Floor of Kerr, which we didn't do this year but we're gonna try again next year! I think it is fantastic that they have upped their donations to a point that make it hard for us to beat them as it's a win all around! First, we focus on links between the rapidly warming East Australian Current and the prevalence of Kudoa sp. infection in broadbill swordfish, leading to myoliquefaction ('jellymeat') of the flesh. By combining molecular techniques, microscopy, and dynamic spatiotemporal modeling, we developed predictions, forecasts and climate projections of high-risk areas within the fishery, to help minimize wastage and improve sustainability of the industry. Second, we focus on red abalone, by defining and mapping climate refugia within the California Current. By integrating measures of physiological stress in response to environmental conditions with output from dynamically downscaled climate models, we will identify potential refugia that are most conducive to facilitating the persistence of abalone under changing ocean conditions. This disparity is largely due to inaccessibility, inadequate accommodations, and a prevalent culture of ableism in STEM. While recent efforts to foster inclusivity in the scientific community have made progress in some arenas, disabled marine scientists continue to be excluded from vital conversations and initiatives aimed at increasing representation. To truly change our field, it is crucial to identify and address the unique challenges faced by disabled scientists. In order to catalyze this change, OSU graduate student Reilly Boyt, founded Disabilities Within Ocean Sciences (DWOS), a non-profit organization aimed at providing a network and resources for disabled marine scientists and organizations interested in being more inclusive and accessible. Here in the US Pacific Northwest, dunes cover nearly 50% of the coastline and feature the largest dune sheet in North America. A century ago, two non-native beachgrass species (European beachgrass Ammophila arenaria and American beachgrass Ammophila breviligulata) were intentionally planted on our coastline to stabilize the open, shifting sand environment. The result was a landscape-level transformation of the coast with consequences for coastal protection, carbon storage, recreation, and native species conservation. In this presentation, Dr. Hacker discusses the past, present, and future of US Pacific Northwest dunes, highlighting a suite of interdisciplinary field, laboratory, and modeling studies focused on the invasion and its consequences. She will also discuss attempts to restore dunes to their native state and a recently discovered "super beachgrass" species, formed from the hybridization of the two non-native grass species. Hello All! The Beavers Belong Support Network is excited to announce we are currently hiring 2 Student Leaders to join our team for the 2025-2026 school year! Student Leaders will be asked to work 3-5 hours per week and compensated starting at $16.00/hour. BBSN Student Leaders design and implement participant recruitment activities, (co)facilitate weekly peer support groups, connect peers to relevant campus and community resources, and attend ongoing professional development opportunities.
