Here in the US Pacific Northwest, dunes cover nearly 50% of the coastline and feature the largest dune sheet in North America. A century ago, two non-native beachgrass species (European beachgrass Ammophila arenaria and American beachgrass Ammophila breviligulata) were intentionally planted on our coastline to stabilize the open, shifting sand environment. The result was a landscape-level transformation of the coast with consequences for coastal protection, carbon storage, recreation, and native species conservation. In this presentation, Dr. Hacker discusses the past, present, and future of US Pacific Northwest dunes, highlighting a suite of interdisciplinary field, laboratory, and modeling studies focused on the invasion and its consequences. She will also discuss attempts to restore dunes to their native state and a recently discovered "super beachgrass" species, formed from the hybridization of the two non-native grass species. OSU Assist: Mobile Crisis Response OSU Assist is a multi-disciplinary support team that provides compassionate mobile crisis response and wraparound services for students facing mental health challenges or experiencing other forms of distress. This team brings together new personnel and existing university services to support students facing challenges. By calling 911 or 541-737-7000, OSU Assist will be dispatched in crisis situations that meet certain criteria. This could include instances of suicide ideation, substance abuse issues, survivors seeking support and welfare checks. The team provides serve on the Corvallis campus from Wednesday through Sunday, 1 p.m. to 1 a.m., with hours anticipated to expand in future terms.
