The two current dominant narratives for the ocean are anchored in the past. The older one considers the ocean to be so vast, bountiful, and resilient that it is simply too big to fail. This first narrative drives pollution and overexploitation of resources. A second, more recent narrative is that the ocean is now so depleted, polluted, and disrupted, and the drivers of those outcomes are so powerful and complex, that the ocean is simply too big to fix. A third, new narrative is emerging, based on scientific findings, existing solutions, and innovative partnerships and policies. This new narrative ocean is neither too big to fail, nor is it too big to fix. But it is too important and too central to our future to ignore. This can be accomplished with a "strategic science communication mindset," involving the three core elements of strategic communications: message, audience, vehicle. We will introduce the research behind strategic science communication, present a generalizable framework, and demonstrate how a communication matrix provides an organizational structure for implementing a strategic communication plan. The framework: (1) outlines and articulates a project's goals and objectives; (2) identifies communication goals; (3) identifies audiences; (4) develops messages; (5) selects vehicles; and (6) develops clear metrics that will allow for evaluating the success of the communication plan. We will present examples of key strategies and current best practices in science communications - tied back to the three core elements of strategic science communication - with the goal of offering options and resources as Hatfielders develop their strategic science communication efforts. Designed to monitor the various human-time-scale manifestations of the underlying processes of ridge spreading, it quickly achieved its objectives: two months after the deployment, a major eruption occurred at the heart of the observation network. The instruments, ranging from geodetic sensors to hydrophones, all captured data that can be related to the crisis, resulting in an unprecedented monitoring of an ocean ridge eruption. Among these sensors, moored hydrophones were able to detect the acoustic activity generated by the crisis, playing a key role in the observations. To extract useful information from those data, artifical intelligence techniques were developed. This seminar will focus on the analysis of hydroacoustic data. All lectures are free and open to the public and streamed on Zoom, with recordings available afterward. Headwater streams are essential habitat and provide clean water to downstream users. Their federal protection depends upon their connectivity to downstream waters, which is changing in response to climate and weather patterns. In this talk, I review both the science and policy that govern headwater stream protections. In particular, I highlight a 70+ year study at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest (near Blue River, Oregon in the Cascade Range) to document the changing flows, connectivity, and protections that could be anticipated in the coming decades. Through tribal partnerships and research collaborations, the production of this native species in the Pacific Northwest has been shown to be feasible. However, outbreaks of furunculosis, caused by atypical Aeromonas salmonicida, have been identified as a major bottleneck during the production cycle. Disease outbreaks in aquaculture can result in high mortalities and economic losses. Prevention of furunculosis is identified as a high-priority need for sablefish aquaculture. The NOAA personnel, in Newport, conduct research in the areas of aquatic animal health and disease in order to assess and minimize the impact of diseases on both important cultured and wild species. We use a multi-faceted approach to investigate alternative strategies to reduce the effects of disease in the culture of sablefish in the Pacific Northwest. Our research addresses the influence of different vaccine strategies and dietary supplements on preventing sablefish mortality; while also characterizing the potential for disease transmission between wild and cultured species. The two current dominant narratives for the ocean are anchored in the past. The older one considers the ocean to be so vast, bountiful, and resilient that it is simply too big to fail. This first narrative drives pollution and overexploitation of resources. A second, more recent narrative is that the ocean is now so depleted, polluted, and disrupted, and the drivers of those outcomes are so powerful and complex, that the ocean is simply too big to fix. A third, new narrative is emerging, based on scientific findings, existing solutions, and innovative partnerships and policies.
