We are on Week 3 of the Water Resources Science Spring Seminar Series. For questions or concerns, contact knutscas(a)oregonstate.edu<mailto:knutscas@oregonstate.edu>. Dr. Jovanelly is a Professor and Research Affiliate in Geology at Berry College in Georgia. She is a classically trained hydrologist. She has completed water quality assessments on five continents comparing developed, undeveloped, and developing countries while focusing on major river systems including the Nile, Ganges, Amazon, Mississippi. In 2017-19, she was awarded a US Fulbright Research position with Nacional Universidad in Costa Rica to study water resources in national parks. This came after she completed her first Fulbright Research assignment (2013-14) with Makerere University (Uganda), where she focused on forest hydrology, a project funded by the National Geographic Society. In addition, Dr. Jovanelly was appointed as a US Fulbright Specialist, which allowed her to consult on worldwide water conservation, allocation, and quality issues. She will be visiting with us on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Also please note Dr. Jovanelly will be giving a second talk, Iceland- an island torn apart. Seabird behaviour and health (physiology) thus reflects shifts in oceanographic conditions, food availability, and climate dynamics. Small, lightweight tracking devices that collect data on seabird movements, foraging behavior, and environmental conditions has greatly enhanced our ability to use seabirds as effective indicators, pinpointing the moment where predator meets prey. Focusing on long-term studies at Coats Island (Nunavut) and Middleton Island (Alaska), the presentation explores how monitoring seabird behaviour and health reveals trends in ocean temperatures, prey distributions and pollution. In particular, energetics plays a key role integrating behaviour and physiology and acts as an early warning system for ecological collapse across both systems. Understanding the relationship between seabirds and environmental change is vital for conservation efforts, marine ecosystem management, and mitigating climate change impacts. The planned lease auction had been scheduled for October 2024 but was postponed due to lack of competitive interest from developers. While leasing efforts are currently paused at the federal level, state policymakers are actively developing a roadmap for offshore wind development that would clarify the state’s role and priorities, largely driven by contentious responses to development from local community members, commercial fishers, and tribes. One potential mechanism for addressing public concerns is the negotiation of community benefit arrangements (CBAs). On the East Coast, where offshore wind development is further along, various communities have negotiated CBAs with offshore wind developers that specify the benefits to those affected by development. However, CBAs can encompass a wide range of benefits or community priorities, and the negotiation can be challenging for communities that lack experience with such arrangements. Our seminar will give a brief overview of the offshore wind planning effort in Oregon, cover the various forms of offshore wind CBAs that have been negotiated around the U.S., and share insights from interviews with both local communities and offshore wind developers on how both sides approach CBAs. First, we focus on links between the rapidly warming East Australian Current and the prevalence of Kudoa sp. infection in broadbill swordfish, leading to myoliquefaction (‘jellymeat’) of the flesh. By combining molecular techniques, microscopy, and dynamic spatiotemporal modeling, we developed predictions, forecasts and climate projections of high-risk areas within the fishery, to help minimize wastage and improve sustainability of the industry. Second, we focus on red abalone, by defining and mapping climate refugia within the California Current. By integrating measures of physiological stress in response to environmental conditions with output from dynamically downscaled climate models, we will identify potential refugia that are most conducive to facilitating the persistence of abalone under changing ocean conditions. New Weekly Modeling & Data Analysis Support Space – All Are Welcome!

Dear all, I’m excited to announce a new weekly drop-in session for anyone interested in data analysis, modeling, coding, machine learning, high performance computing cluster (supercomputer), figure-making, etc. Whether you're a student just getting started or a seasoned researcher, this is meant to be a supportive and inclusive space where we can learn from and help each other. When: Wednesdays from 2:00–4:00 PM (spring term | now until June 4th) Where: HOV 100 (Hovland classroom) I’ve reserved the space every week so folks can bring their laptops, ongoing projects, questions, or just curiosity. The goal is to create a low-pressure environment where we can work alongside each other and ask for help when needed. This isn’t a class or formal workshop, and I won’t have all the answers—but the more people show up, the more likely someone in the room will be able to help. It’s also a great opportunity to share tips and tools and grow our collective skills. Even experienced scientists may pick up something new! I’ll be there every week, and John Bolte is also planning to join every other week (schedule permitting) to offer his insights and expertise. All experience levels are welcome, and I especially encourage both students and faculty to stop by and help create a collaborative and safe space to explore our data together. Hope to see you there! Would you be interested in an on-campus job working with industry clients to reduce energy use and improve productivity, while applying what you are learning in your classes? The OSU Energy Efficiency Center (EEC) is looking for motivated student energy analysts to work part-time during the school year (10-24 hrs/week) and full-time during the summer (30-40 hrs/week). The OSU EEC offers comprehensive, student-led, on-site energy and productivity assessments to small and medium-sized manufacturers through a US Department of Energy funded program. Student teams advised by engineering faculty visit manufacturers and seek ways to increase their productivity and reduce energy use and waste. These engineering analyses and improvement recommendations are compiled into a report and delivered to the client. Designed to monitor the various human-time-scale manifestations of the underlying processes of ridge spreading, it quickly achieved its objectives: two months after the deployment, a major eruption occurred at the heart of the observation network. The instruments, ranging from geodetic sensors to hydrophones, all captured data that can be related to the crisis, resulting in an unprecedented monitoring of an ocean ridge eruption. Among these sensors, moored hydrophones were able to detect the acoustic activity generated by the crisis, playing a key role in the observations. To extract useful information from those data, artifical intelligence techniques were developed. This seminar will focus on the analysis of hydroacoustic data. Seabird behaviour and health (physiology) thus reflects shifts in oceanographic conditions, food availability, and climate dynamics. Small, lightweight tracking devices that collect data on seabird movements, foraging behavior, and environmental conditions has greatly enhanced our ability to use seabirds as effective indicators, pinpointing the moment where predator meets prey. Focusing on long-term studies at Coats Island (Nunavut) and Middleton Island (Alaska), the presentation explores how monitoring seabird behaviour and health reveals trends in ocean temperatures, prey distributions and pollution. In particular, energetics plays a key role integrating behaviour and physiology and acts as an early warning system for ecological collapse across both systems. Understanding the relationship between seabirds and environmental change is vital for conservation efforts, marine ecosystem management, and mitigating climate change impacts.
