Several of this year's programs received more interest than they had capacity; however, we want to let you know that it's still possible to go abroad this September. Students will enroll in AGRI 499/599: Farming Systems and Pastoral Landscapes in New Zealand (3 cr.) The 2024 program in New Zealand (Sept. 10 - 24) is embedded within Fall Term course extension plus 5a: Sept. 11 - Nov. 2, 2024. (7 weeks) Course learning objectives: 1. Examine the characteristics of primary food production systems while identifying the potential opportunities and addressing the complex challenges inherent in food production within the context of New Zealand. 2. Analyze and evaluate pasture and confinement-based livestock production systems, assessing their economic, environmental, and social implications through comparative and contrasting methods. 3. Analyze the intricate relationship between plant growth and development in relation to environmental factors. 4. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of key terminology in grassland agriculture and critically examine commonly employed pasture grasses, legumes, and forbs, providing insightful insights into their characteristics and applications. 5. List strategies for reducing the impact of livestock farming on the environment 6. Examine the significance of data-driven decision-making practices in agricultural operations in contrast to reliance on personal opinions, highlighting the critical role of empirical evidence and analytics in guiding informed choices and strategies. River Restoration Engineers Wanted

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) is looking to hire river restoration professionals based out of the Columbia-Pacific Northwest Regional Office in Boise, Idaho, and another in John Day, OR. Reclamation contributes to the implementation of salmonid habitat improvement projects to help meet commitments contained in Biological Opinions. We are seeking passionate, knowledgeable, hardworking people that can add to our groups' skills and abilities - people who are open minded, willing to learn, and excited to help continue our successful history of project implementation. The incumbents will provide technical, engineering, contracting, or program-level oversight on river restoration projects throughout the intermountain Pacific Northwest. Both the Tributary Habitat Program (THP) and the River Systems and Restoration (RSR) Group are seeking multiple Civil Engineers. The work will vary by group and position. Within the Tributary Habitat Program (generally more policy/program/planning level) there are two or more positions to be filled. * Habitat Engineer (multiple positions) - working with project partners across the PNW, supporting technical aspects of projects, developing project priorities and budgets, contracting, and other tasks. * John Day Liaison - working with local project partners in John Day, OR, becoming an expert in the basin, developing budgets and project priorities, contracting, supporting construction activities and implementation and other tasks. The River Systems and Restoration Group is design and technical work focused. The positions entail designing, implementing, and monitoring large- and small-scale river restoration projects to benefit juvenile salmonids. Field work may include site assessment, data collection, surveying, discharge measurements, and construction observation. Office work typically includes developing topo-bathymetric surface models, hydrologic analysis, hydraulic modeling, river channel and habitat structure design, streambed sediment design, drafting in AutoCAD Civil3D, GIS analyses, and reporting. OSU Energy Efficiency Center Would you be interested in an on-campus job working with industry clients to reduce energy use and improve productivity, while applying what you are learning in your classes? The OSU Energy Efficiency Center (EEC) is looking for motivated student energy analysts to work part-time during the school year (10-20 hrs/week) and during the summer (~40 hrs/week). The OSU EEC offers comprehensive, student-led, on-site energy and productivity assessments to small and medium-sized manufacturers through a US Department of Energy funded program. Student teams advised by engineering faculty visit manufacturers and seek ways to increase their productivity and reduce energy use and waste. These engineering analyses and improvement recommendations are compiled into a report and delivered to the client. It is a great way to see many different industrial processes and learn about ways to save energy. Exciting news! The OASE student application deadline has been EXTENDED until April 21st! We connect businesses, academia and government to cultivate the next generation of sustainability professionals. During this 10-week internship, college students are matched with an Oregon business to create sustainability solutions for industry practices. Interns help businesses improve efficiency, save money and reduce waste through projects based on preventing pollution. The interns are PAID, and the program is FREE for first-time businesses.
