David Moreno-Lumbreras is a postdoctoral researcher at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) in Madrid and a postdoc fellow at the University of Victoria. In this talk, he will present his thesis topic, exploring the visualization of different software metrics in extended reality.

Hello EECS Students!
We have a new professor joining us this fall. Dr. Renato Figueiredo will be offering a new course: Principles of Computer Systems Design. This will be a 4 credit course and is already on the schedule of classes. If you are interested in taking the course, please email Dr. Figueiredo for permission.
Course Description:
The design of hardware and software in computer systems ranging from personal devices to large-scale distributed, networked computers is an increasingly complex undertaking and requires understanding not only of individual sub-systems, such as the micro-processor, but also the interactions among sub-systems. This class provides a broad introduction to the main principles and abstractions for engineering computer systems, and in-depth studies of their use on computer systems across a variety of designs, be it an operating system, a client/server application, a database server, or a fault-tolerant disk cluster. Design/programming assignments and a project will be assigned in this class. These entail an exploration of a topic related to the design of a computer system through implementation of a prototype. The assignments and project will require significant software programming using the Python high-level language.

Hello Everyone,
Dr. Karthika Mohan is teaching an exciting new AI course this fall term! Description and the link to the syllabus is below.
This is an Artificial Intelligence course offered by Dr. Karthika Mohan. This course starts with AI and probabilistic reasoning basics, highlighting probability theory's role in AI, especially in uncertain environments. Students then learn to model complex systems and make predictions using Bayesian Networks. The second half focuses on causal reasoning, which is essential for distinguishing correlation from causation and has applications in various fields such as machine learning, statistics, epidemiology and economics. Causal knowledge is key for creating accurate real-world models, informed decision-making and building ethical and responsible AI systems. Dear all,
Hope you are all having a great summer.
I would like to let you know about a senior level course to be offered in the fall term: ECE499/CS499 Statistical Signal Processing (MW10:00-11:50am). In this course, I will teach fundamentals of statistical methods that are essential for EECS students (detection, estimation, and machine learning).
This course is targeted for two groups of students: (i) Engineering students interested in learning statistical inference methods (including machine learning) and how they are applied to solve various problems, and (ii) Computer Science students (interested in machine learning) who want to learn about the classical theory of statistical inference and the statistical perspective of machine learning (note that ML is essentially about making a statistical inference).
The prerequisites include basic background in probability (ECE 353 or ST314) and familiarity with Python or MATLAB. The knowledge of signals or systems is not required at all.

Professor Xiangqi Zhu will be teaching Data Science for Contemporary Power Grid this fall term. The course syllabus is attached and the description is below. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Zhu.
Course Description:
This course introduces the principles and applications of data science in the context of modern
power grids. We will cover various topics including statistical analysis, predictive analytics, data
visualization, supervise/unsupervised learning, and how these techniques can be contributed to
reliable, resilient, and safe power grid operations.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will be able to apply principles and techniques of data science
to analyze, interpret, visualize, and utilize complex datasets from contemporary power grids. They
will develop the skills to implement statistical analysis, predictive analytics, and machine learning
algorithms to address challenges in power grid operations, improving grid reliability and resilience.
Moreover, students will gain an understanding of the social impact associated with applying data
science in the context of power grid management. Specifically, 5 goals are set for students to
achieve in this course:
1. Analyze power grid data: Effectively identify patterns and anomalies in the data.
2. Predict power grid data: Effectively estimate power grid generation, demand, and
behavior.
3. Visualize power grid data: Effectively communicate insights and findings using data
visualization techniques.
4. Evaluate social impact: Effectively evaluate social impact of the data science applications
in power grid, including privacy, equity, and transparency in data-driven decision-making
processes.
