IMPORTANT UPDATES to the CS Applied Option

Dear CS-Applied Option Students, Four important updates are now in effect for all Corvallis and Ecampus students completing the Applied Option in Computer Science. Unfortunately, these changes are not showing up in your MyDegrees record. Please connect with your EECS advisor or come to drop-in advising hours if you have any questions about these updates. 1. Students can no longer declare the Cybersecurity Focus Area in the Applied Option. Students looking to declare the Cybersecurity Focus Area will need to declare the Cybersecurity Option when it becomes available (see attached document). Applied Option students who already declared the Cybersecurity Focus Area, had their request approved and had their MyDegrees record updated can either complete the approved focus area requirements or switch to the Cybersecurity Option when it becomes available. We encourage students to switch to the Cybersecurity Option as it shows up on your OSU transcripts. Focus Areas do not show up on your OSU transcript. 1. ST 314 is no longer required for students in the Applied Option. ST 314 is being added to the list of approved CS Restricted Electives. * If you have already successfully completed ST 314 or an equivalent, it will now count towards your nine (9) credits of CS Restricted Electives. * If you have not already successfully completed ST 314 or an equivalent, you can take a different CS Restricted Elective instead. Note that ST 314 is a prerequisite for CS 434 and CS 476. 1. The CS Restricted Elective requirement in the Applied Option has been increased from six (6) credits to nine (9) credits (see above statement about ST 314). 1. Applied Option students can now substitute CS 370 for either CS 352, CS 372, CS 381 or CS 444 as long as CS 370 is not already being used towards degree requirements. Note that CS 352, CS 372 and CS 381 are prerequisites for other CS courses. Please notify your EECS advisor if you want to make this substitution. Your EECS advisor will need to update your MyDegrees record after verifying that CS 370 is not already being used towards degree requirements. We do not anticipate these updates negatively impacting students. If you believe these changes will negatively impact you, please contact your EECS advisor. New Cybersecurity Option and Registering for CS 424

Dear CS Students, We are excited to announce the anticipated launch of our new Cybersecurity Option in fall 2023. The attached document provides more information about the Option, the tracks in the Option and anticipated course requirements. The Option will be available to both Corvallis and Ecampus based students. It will be replacing the Cybersecurity Focus Area in the Applied Option. As of today, we are still waiting for the Cybersecurity Option to be officially approved. We do not anticipate any issues with getting the approval. However, we cannot change students into the Cybersecurity Option until it is officially approved. We will send out an email notification when the Option has been approved. Applied students with a declared Cybersecurity Focus Area will be asked to change to the Cybersecurity Option once it is officially approved. We do not anticipate issues with students making this transition. Please contact your primary EECS advisor if you have already declared the Cybersecurity Focus Area and believe the switch to the Cybersecurity Option will negatively impact you. One of the benefits of the new Option is that it is transcript visible. This means employers will be able to see on your transcript that you specialized in Cybersecurity. The Option will also provide Corvallis based students the option of completing a Practicum sequence (CS 424-425) in place of the traditional CS Senior Design sequence (CS 461-463). Ecampus students will complete the traditional CS Senior Design sequence. See instructions below for registering for the fall 2023 section of CS 424. Good Morning! Our new professor, Zane Ma, will be offering a new special topics course this fall term. Empirical Computer Security will be offered as CS 499/CS 579. The syllabus is attached and a course description is below. "Empirical security research seeks to understand how computer security concerns manifest in practice. For instance, in 2017 NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) reversed their password recommendations after empirical research showed that their requirements actually led to more easily guessable passwords! This course explores recent research developments in applied security research across a wide range of computer security areas: computer networks, the web, social engineering, misinformation, malware, botnets, usable security, and emerging applications such as Internet of Things, smart cars, etc. This also a project-based course that will concurrently introduce students to the basics of security research. The instructor will work with students to identify a research problem (e.g., identifying new threats, developing security defenses), design experiments, collect data, and communicate findings through writing and presentation. In addition to teaching modern computer security, this course aims to prepare students for successful research careers, either in graduate school or industry."
