We have an exciting internship within the Public Works department! For the last 23 years, we have had the Stream Crew internship program every summer! The Stream Crew Technicians gain real-world field experience that will better prepare them for careers in environmental and natural resource management!

The Stream Crew Environmental Aide is the most senior position in the City’s Summer Stream Cleaning Program. In this lead role, the employee works closely with the Stormwater Program Coordinator and Stormwater Quality Supervisor to coordinate daily activities for 9-12 Public Works Interns during the summer months. This employee will have specialized education and/or certification in a specific area related to hydrology, environmental science, natural resource management, GIS, and/or experience leading teams in a field setting.

This position is responsible for directing Summer Stream Crew interns to conduct maintenance activities in the Stormwater Services division of Public Works. This position works directly with section supervisors to develop and implement daily tasks for the interns, and is also responsible for end-of-season reporting and presentation of program accomplishments. The employee in this classification acts in a lead role to Public Works Intern staff. This employee works under the supervision of the Stormwater Quality Supervisor and the Stormwater Program Coordinator.

Typical Duties For Stream Crew Include

·       Assume a visible leadership role in the Stream Cleaning Program.

·       Coordinate daily activities for 9-12 interns to efficiently clean trash and debris from 60 miles of urban streams in compliance with established safety protocols and regulatory standards.

·       Direct GIS field data collection, performing quality control checks to meet the program’s data quality objectives.

·       Regular communication with the Program Coordinator and Stormwater Quality Supervisor, providing frequent status updates on project objectives and personnel.

·       Responsible for tracking and reporting all project metrics, including schedule, progress, and time-to-completion.

·       Review data collected by field teams to ensure that they are accurate, consistent, and complete prior to project completion.

·       Accountable for project deliverables including, but not limited to GIS field data, end-of-season presentation, tracking of invoices, receipts, and dump slips.

What are the minimum qualifications?

·       Must pass the pre-employment background check.

·       Must have an Oregon Driver license and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.

·       Associates degree or two years of major course work from an accredited college or university in environmental science, biology, natural resource, geography, geology, engineering, mathematics, or planning field, and two years of experience related to area of assignment, or any combination of education and experience.

·       Experience collecting, synthesizing, and reporting field data.

·       Experience writing/editing technical documents.

·       Experience following, implementing, or creating standard operating procedures.

·       Experience working in a structured safety environment.

Preferred Qualifications

·       One semester/term of GIS course work is highly desirable.

·       GIS, ArcMap, and/or other mapping software/handheld devices experience preferred.

·       Past Stream Crew experience is highly desired, but not essential for hire.

·       Three years of college level coursework majoring in physical science or natural resource management.

·       At least two semesters of GIS course work or equivalent; experience with ArcGIS Online is desirable.

·       Experience in municipal or other local government is desirable.

·       Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with general public, customers, subordinates, and coworkers, and supervisors.

·       Previous experience in a leadership role or role that was responsible for coordinating team activities and accountable for the completion of group tasks.

·       Experience leading teams safely outdoors, and being responsible for the safety of others.

·       Ability to mediate or deescalate interpersonal conflicts between coworkers or team members.

Certifications/Licenses

·       CPR/AED Certification desired.

·       GIS Certification desired.
