ERM is looking for a motivated, detail-oriented, Consulting Associate, Engineer/Geologist to join our growing team in the Portland, Oregon office. Working under the direction of project managers and partners, the successful candidate will work on a wide variety of site investigation, remediation, compliance, and hazardous waste management projects throughout Pacific Northwest. This opportunity includes projects that utilize ERM's technical experts to implement innovative and regulatory driven engineering and remediation technologies, unique subsurface contaminated site investigations, and complex wastewater compliance projects, all while building the required experience to obtain your professional registration. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Conduct field work, including soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, soil vapor, and indoor air sampling, aquifer testing, drilling oversight and soil logging, soil boring and monitoring well installation, well development, purging and sampling, remedial and wastewater treatment pilot tests, and remedial system operation and maintenance. * Assist with remediation system operation and maintenance, construction, and subcontractor management. * Compile, analyze, and evaluate data; assist in report preparation. * Assist with environmental compliance reports, engineering design reports, sampling and investigation work plans, and quality assurance plans. * Develop health and safety plans including job hazard analyses. * Assist in ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. * Work within quality/budget/schedule expectations and scope-specific assignments. * Communicate with subcontractors, regulatory agents, tenants, and clients during field activities. REQUIREMENTS: * Bachelors in geology, hydrogeology, or engineering; Masters a plus. * Knowledge of aquatic chemistry, chemical fate and transport, hydrology, and/or groundwater hydrology a plus. * 0+ years of relevant environmental experience including performing field work (e.g., environmental media sampling, construction oversite, etc.), report writing, and general safety training. * Preferred 2+ years of relevant environmental experience. * Strong work ethic and willingness/interest in field assignments. * Detail-oriented with solutions and results-oriented aptitude and hands-on trouble-shooting/problem-solving skills. * Comfortable with data manipulation and analysis in Excel or similar program. * GIT or EIT certification preferred. * Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health and Safety protocols. * Effective written/verbal communication and organization/analytical skills; experience recording/writing detailed technical data and reports a plus. * Ability to work independently and as part of a team. * Ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility, travel, and work independently with minimal supervision. * Valid driver's license and a good driving record. * Ability to lift at least 40 pounds. * Ability to perform field work standing or walking for full field days. * Local candidates preferred. The engineering work requires a professional knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques for designing straightforward civil engineering projects involving soil, water and/or sediments under the direction of senior engineering staff. The Staff Engineer will also be responsible for completing a wide variety of field activities including stormwater inspections, construction observation and verification, and environmental sampling and monitoring; all under the supervision of project and senior staff. What you will be doing at Farallon: * Assisting in development and performance of feasibility studies and related pilot testing programs with oversight from senior staff. * Accurately interpreting data relative to applicable regulations and standards. * Developing conceptual designs and performing alternatives analysis on straightforward projects under the direction of senior engineering staff. * Performing design calculations, prepares cost estimates and construction specifications, and develops design drawings in AutoCAD under the direction of senior engineering staff. * Planning and conducting field projects in accordance with Farallon health and safety practices. * Performing construction observation and quality assurance with assistance of senior staff. * Assisting with preparation of text for reports, feasibility studies, and cleanup action plans. * Implementing project quality control procedures to produce products that meet Farallon standards. * Professionally representing Farallon to clients, vendors, regulatory agencies, and others. * Developing understanding of Farallon standard contract documents. * Assisting with preparation of engineering related material for proposals and cost estimates. * Collecting samples of soil, groundwater, and other environmental media in support of site investigation and remediation objectives. * Installing monitoring wells, performing remediation monitoring, and overseeing contractors. * Travel to job sites is required to support ongoing and potential project work activities. What you will need to succeed * Bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, or related engineering discipline. * Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate or ability to obtain within one year. * Familiar with Microsoft Office 365 Suite, including Outlook, Excel, and Word. * Ability to work independently or as part of a team. * Strong attention to detail * Ability to assertively direct others in the field such as subcontracted drillers, excavation contractors, utility locators, and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently. * Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical work hours. * Ability to analyze data and applying problem-solving skills. * Willingness to learn and complete basic reporting and paperwork tasks. * Knowledge of appropriate state regulations, including appropriate health and safety regulations required to perform typical field and office tasks. * Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform field work and a wide range of physical activities, including sustained walking, standing, and reaching, in an outdoor environment. * Must be able to wear respiratory protection and pass baseline physical for job position. * Valid driver's license and safe driving record. PDX Pharmaceuticals currently has openings for “Research Assistants” or "Research Associates". The candidate will be part of a pre-clinical research program to develop nanoparticle-based targeted- and immuno- therapeutics for treating cancers (see our technology and product pipeline).The project is currently supported by funding from the National Institute of Health’s National Cancer Institute (NCI). The candidate will work on joint research projects between PDX Pharmaceuticals and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU)’s department of Biomedical Engineering. He/she will assist the team with day-to-day research and administrative operation, including nanoparticle synthesis, optimization, and characterization; batch experiments, molecular assays, cell culture, animal (mouse) handling/experiments, and literature review. The candidate will also be involved in coordinating GMP-compliant manufacturing of our lead drug candidate, IND-enabling studies, and interaction with the FDA. Although direct relevant research experience is a big plus, it is not a requirement. Candidates are however expected to learn fast, be detail-oriented, responsible, and hard-working (okay with working occasional long hours to meet deadline). This position is appropriate for new/recent graduates who look to learn, obtain more experience for a couple of years in biomedical research in a start-up/academic environment prior to graduate schools or other research jobs. Growth within the company is also promoted, if desired. The City of Albany, Oregon, has one opening for the summer of 2024 for a GIS intern. The position will split time between the GIS department and Water Quality Services. Work will consist of assisting the GIS department in day-to-day operation and maintaining stormwater GIS databases and collecting field data. The position provides opportunities in professional growth and mentorship, foundational GIS technical skills, exposure to GIS technology and data processing techniques. Responsibilities: * Collaborate with a team on a variety of GIS projects * Design, create, analyze and maintain citywide GIS databases and datasets * Create effective and easy to read maps using ArcGIS software for paper and the web * Help develop geoprocessing automation models using related GIS software tools to update, maintain and analyze databases to ensure spatial integrity * Collect data in the field using ArcGIS mobile data collection tools * Manipulate geospatial data with great attention to detail and efficiency * Help provide technical GIS assistance to GIS users at the city * Assist in the implementation of MS4/TMDL programs. * Safely wade in streams and storm channels, traverse stream, and creek banks. * Navigate difficult terrain including creeks, streams, up and down stream banks, etc. * Perform duties as necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position. * Comply with Safety Requirements including wearing proper safety equipment as required by OSHA and City policy. Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Effective oral and written communication skills and professionalism * Maintain productivity while performing multiple tasks * Capacity to work well in collaborative environment, and show flexibility with assignments * Show an interest in the geospatial field * Desire to learn new skills * Ability to listen to and receive constructive criticism * Maintain good working relationships with staff * Capable of adhering to an established, consistent works schedule and arriving to work on time * Understanding of water quality field sampling, ArcGIS Apps (Survey 123, Story Maps, Dashboards, Workforce). Qualifications: * Must be accepted with intent to enroll or enrolled in a full time College or University program. Preferred major in Environmental Science, Geography, GIS, Hydrology/Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental Engineering, or other science field. * Must have a valid driver's license. * Must be able to successfully complete a post-offer substance abuse test and background investigation. Period of Employment: This is a temporary position, 40 hours max per week, not to exceed 12 weeks. Start and end date are between June 1 and September 30, 2024. You can expect a weekly workload ranging between 30-40 hours/week. The work schedule is weekday, but also will include occasional early morning starts. All work performed during daylight hours. Compensation: $18-$21/hour dependent on skills and experience 75% of the time you will be in the office: You will be extensively using environmental mapping tools such as topographic maps, digital maps, mapping software and database applications. A working knowledge of ArcGIS software, familiarity with raster and vector data, and Aerial image interpretation will make you stand out! 25% of the time you will spend in the field: You will assist the water quality team in collecting spatial data and conducting storm sewer outfall inventory (Outfall Reconnaissance Inventory (ORI)), as part of the City's Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE) program. The OSU Energy Efficiency Center (EEC) is looking for motivated student energy analysts to work part-time during the school year (10-20 hrs/week) and during the summer (~40 hrs/week). The OSU EEC offers comprehensive, student-led, on-site energy and productivity assessments to small and medium-sized manufacturers through a US Department of Energy funded program. Student teams advised by engineering faculty visit manufacturers and seek ways to increase their productivity and reduce energy use and waste. These engineering analyses and improvement recommendations are compiled into a report and delivered to the client. It is a great way to see many different industrial processes and learn about ways to save energy.
