Oregon State University Fisheries and Wildlife Department is seeking at student worker to assist Crater Lake National Park with removal of nonnative fish from headwater streams in the southern Oregon Cascades. Duties will include backpack electrofishing in wadable streams, collecting environmental DNA samples, aquatic macroinvertebrate sampling, and possibly assisting with treatment of a stream with piscicide. The work is almost entirely outdoors and involves arduous physical activity (e.g., hiking off trail, wading in streams, carrying heavy backpacks). The student worker will work as a member of a crew composed of National Park Service employees. Required skills are enthusiasm, an ability to hike (up to 10 miles per day), ability to carry a backpack weighing up to 35 pounds, and an interest in fish or aquatic ecology. Shared housing within Crater Lake National Park will be provided at no cost. Pay: $18/hr, plus housing. Junior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program (JRCOSTEP) Engineering students can train alongside active duty Engineer Officers of the National Park Service during their summer break as part of the Junior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program. Participants are paid and receive health benefits ,a housing allowance and a travel allowance. Programs last between 30 and 120 days in Summer 2024. There is no obligation to join the USPHS Commissioned Corps. Students will work in collaboration with the National Park Service's Facilities Design and Construction. Duties may include * Assists with engineering tasks required for the design and construction packages of various projects throughout the region. Projects may include sanitation facilities, rehabilitating visitor-facing facilities, employee facilities, and others. * Visits sites to obtain information such as condition of systems, location of sewer mains, local water pressures, plumbing layouts, etc., investigates malfunctioning water and sewer system components, and assists with preliminary diagnosis. * Estimates cost, manpower, and material necessary to correct malfunctioning systems. * Inspects active construction of water, wastewater, or other facilities. * Compliance with designs and specifications and safety requirements. Hydrogen Engineering Intern Position Obsidian Renewables Obsidian Renewables is a leader in renewable energy project development in the Pacific Northwest. We consist of a modest number of highly motivated, self-driven professionals that punch above our weight in project development. Obsidian initially focused on utility scale solar, then expanded its focus to include renewable hydrogen in 2019. Since then, we have been developing the Obsidian Pacific NW Hydrogen Hub, which includes a portfolio of hydrogen production, storage, and distribution projects across Oregon and Washington. Position Description The Hydrogen Engineering Intern will support the research of hydrogen technologies and analysis to help determine which deployment strategies would be most effective in different project situations. A strong emphasis will be on gaseous hydrogen storage systems and hydrogen carrier molecules, but focus on hydrogen production, purification, compression, distribution, end use, electricity procurement, and water procurement may also be needed at times. Some of the topics of focus will include first principles physical analysis, commercial maturity and deployment history, total cost of ownership analysis, safety considerations, environmental considerations, equipment lifetime, and supply chain presence in USA and internationally. Duration Internship term will last for at least 3 months. The desired term length of the internship will be discussed during interviews. The Hydrogen Engineering Intern will: * Review and update Obsidian's internal hydrogen technology knowledge base. * Review industry and academic research articles about hydrogen technology development and project development. * Arrange meetings and interview experts about hydrogen technologies. * Perform engineering analyses to quantitatively and qualitatively assess which technologies are most advantageous for given situations. * Update financial modeling assumptions based upon new research insights. * Present conclusions to management and outside stakeholders. * Support work in other parts of the business as needed. Job Description Overview PNNL's Earth System Science Division enables energy independence and national security through leadership in earth systems science, engineering, and decision analytics. Our work focuses on solving complex problems in the dynamic Earth system. Our interdisciplinary scientists steward a breadth of efforts that encompass research on plants to groundwater science and coastal zones, to storm prediction. Our research focuses on understanding and mitigating operational risks at the interface of human and natural environments. This includes predicting the impacts of natural hazards and extreme climate events on Earth and human systems, along with the impacts of wildfire, flooding, sea level rise and storm surges. We focus on understanding and mitigating environmental contamination and increasing the resiliency, security and sustainability of water resources. We provide geointelligence through advanced sensing and data analytics to forecast complex system behaviors and operational performance to understand human-natural systems. This includes informed decision making and enhanced community resilience, advanced monitoring, and remote sensing of environmental systems for energy and national security. It also includes developing energy systems, including geothermal energy, sustainable oil and gas production, storage and utilization, along with carbon sequestration. Driven by a "science-to-solutions" philosophy, we provide scientific leadership and technology to enhance national security, mitigate natural hazards and optimize disaster response. In the critical areas of energy, environment, intelligence, and defense, we deliver insights and decision support through the development of tools and solutions. Responsibilities The Applied Decision Systems and Analytics (ADSA) group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) provides an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment solving challenging and interesting problems with national and international impact. ADSA staff develop novel analysis methods for data integration with state-of-the-art technologies to help clients craft methods and tools for informed decision-making. The team provides innovative, scalable solutions throughout the entire decision-making process. The workflows, analysis methods, and software tools created serve as the foundation for improved operational awareness, efficient and effective resource deployment, and risk management and communication across technical domains. Summer Habitat Restoration Internship July 10 - August 31, 2023 Summary: Elderberry Wisdom Farm has an opening for a Summer Habitat Restoration Intern. The project includes planning and preparation for our fall Habitat Restoration Internship, working with volunteers, plus farm maintenance activities at our two-acre farm near Salem, OR. In addition to the opportunity for experiential service learning into conservation, habitat restoration, soil regeneration, transitioning to organic, Native plant medicines, microenterprise development, and other topics, the intern will also be able to add a valuable record of employment and experience to their resume. The Summer Habitat Restoration Intern will assist Elderberry Wisdom Farm staff to accomplish its Native Agriculture Biodiversity Accelerator.
