Among the devastating impacts is the post-fire delivery of substantial sediment loads from unstable hillslopes, which can disrupt water supply for rural and urban communities. As part of a larger project emphasizing water security from wildfire threats, this position will lead scholarly research on the role of floodplains in supporting community resilience from wildfires. In particular, this study will focus on the role of existing and reconnected floodplains in storing post-fire sediment loads. The work will involve various research activities including a literature synthesis, analysis of remotely-sensed and locally collected data, and modeling of floodplain processes. Results will be presented in peer-reviewed publications and in presentations to the larger wildfire-water security team and to the scientific community. Position Description: This individual will work with Desirée Tullos and Kellie Vache (Biological and Ecological Engineering), Mary Santelmann (Geography) at Oregon State University and Becky Flitcroft (US Forest Service). This position has an anticipated start date of January 03, 2024, but is open to negotiation. The successful candidate should hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field with a specialization in river hydraulics and engineering, geography/geology/geomorphology, or related fields.
