The Department of Biological & Ecological Engineering at Oregon State University is excited to announce a cohort of
four tenure-track faculty positions. With this initiative, we reaffirm our commitment to mediating the relationship between people and planet to the sustained benefit of both. This cohort will address critical challenges facing humanity in the 21st
century, integrating expertise in food, water, and energy required for systems-level solutions. Collectively, these hires will address natural resource management, agricultural competitiveness, and resilience through engagement with stakeholders as they balance
human outcomes and ecosystem services in managed landscapes. Open positions include:
1. Landscape Biogeochemistry. Expertise in the function, management, ecosystem services, and consequences of nutrient cycles in managed or human-impacted landscapes. Integrated physical, chemical, and biological process dynamics.
Expertise may include coupling biogeochemical cycles to human activities and natural infrastructure, disturbance response and recovery, and/or intentional manipulation of biogeochemical systems (e.g., root zone engineering). This position may be hired at the
Assistant (tenure-track) or Associate (tenured) level. (Posting
#P07587UF)
2. Biosystems Modeling. Expertise in modeling of biosystems including internal feedbacks, responses to changes in external forcing and internal management decisions, and coupled human-natural system modeling. Applications might include
agricultural systems or crop modeling, integrated agricultural and energy systems, management or optimization of agro-ecosystems, scenario planning and forecasting, evaluation of natural infrastructure, or analysis of complex systems dynamics.
(Posting

3. Waste-to-Resource Engineering. Expertise in the use of engineering processes to recover resources from and remediate waste streams from food system operations, particularly solutions employing nature-based solutions including
phytoprocesses, microbial transformations, and/or other bioresource or bioprocess technologies. The evaluation of process operations techno-economic analysis, lifecycle assessment, or similar approaches to assess system sustainability and operation are also
of interest. This position will be jointly appointed with Food Science & Technology as part of their
Resilient Food Systems initiative. (Posting
#P07585UF)
4. Intelligent Food Systems Engineering. Expertise applying intelligent systems engineering principles to food systems, with applications including optimization of operations, real-time adaptive control of unit processes, and/or
process automation. Applications integrating modeling and/or data science approaches to provide decision support, identify trade-offs in complex systems, and optimize operations are of particular interest. Expertise may span sensor design, process automation,
systems optimization. This position is jointly appointed with Food Science & Technology as part of their
Resilient Food Systems initiative. (Posting

About our unit: Biological & Ecological Engineering is a community of scholars with broad interests in a systems approach to understanding the function and management of urban, natural, and managed landscapes as part of food, water,
and energy systems. We have existing expertise in bioprocess engineering, biosystems engineering and modeling, intelligent systems engineering, ecological engineering, & water resources engineering. As a unit, our identity is based on three key pillars:
Holistic. We work with nature, not in spite of it, taking a holistic approach to mediate humans’ relationship with our environment, striving to create balanced solutions that improve health and resilience of both people and
planet.
Creative. We thrive at the intersection of disciplines, creating actionable solutions that leverage natural science to engineer never-before-seen solution to problems in agricultural, urban, forested, and natural landscapes.
Engaged. We partner with stakeholders managing society’s most pressing issues in food, water, energy, and environment, building long-term, high-trust relationships to provide actionable, understandable, science-based solutions.
BEE has a strong culture of inclusivity, valuing a diversity of perspectives, backgrounds, and lived experiences – we are proudly home to the most diverse faculty and student populations in the College of Engineering. We are particularly
interested in applicants from underrepresented groups or with diverse lived experiences to add to the voices and perspectives present in our unit. Our unit values student success, engaging our students in high-quality academic offerings, research mentoring,
internships and industry partnerships, global studies, and experiential learning opportunities. Similarly, we value productive faculty members striving for work-life balance, providing mentoring of early-career faculty and intentionally investing in early
career success with reduced teaching loads, graduate student support, proactive mentoring, and transparent departmental operations.
Working for Oregon State University is so much more than a job!
Oregon State University is a dynamic community of dreamers, doers, problem-solvers and change-makers. We don’t wait for challenges to present themselves, we seek them out and take them on. We welcome students, faculty and staff from every background and
perspective into a community where everyone feels seen and heard. We have deep-rooted mindfulness for the natural world and all who depend on it, and together, we apply knowledge, tools, and skills to build a better future for all. As part of your role in
the college, you will embody and advance the principles and practices conveyed in the CAS
